What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?
925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

food and hunger
In 2016 the world consumed 129.5 billion pounds of beef, that's 232,970.5 pounds of water. As the numbers have only gone up from then,you can see beef production is a problem. Global land use for agriculture is one of the leading causes of climate change, this is because animals(mostly cows) produce methane which is then released into the atmosphere as a greenhouse gas. A single cow produces around 70 to 120 kg of methane per year. Worldwide there are about 1.5 billion cattle, which shows how much the agricultural industry contributes to climate change and why it should be handled.
those are really big numbers and 40% of food goes to waste too so theres much more getting produced and going to waste too what should we to limit the methane from cows?
I also agree that humans consume too much beef. 129.5 pounds of beef is a lot. If the methane is being released into our atmosphere then this is definitely contributing to climate change. There are many new options for eating that does not cause the use of cows and other animals. Many companies are making plant based options to prevent not just the killing of animals, but a way to reduce climate change. If the greenhouses are causing these gases to spread into the atmosphere, we need to stop eating beef, and switch to plant based diets.
We should definitely bring some drastic changes to our diets. Although we should not adopt plant-based diets in my opinion (we are still, in the end, omnivorous), a change must be made to our way of eating. We eat too much meat that is too costly for the environment. Lowering the amount of beef eaten should be a good first step forward.
I do agree that reducing our consumption of meat would reduce the amount of greenhouse gas released in the atmosphere .
However, soy's production also has its fair share of issues. In fact , the production causes the deforestation ( such as parts of amazonian rainforests ) . Moreover, the use of machines to boost the production creates pollution.
It is difficult to make a decision when we take all this into consideration . But I tend to reduce my consumption of meat not only because of its impact on the environment but also to defend the cause of animal welfare.
In reality, I think that we should eat more local food because,indeed, importing food from one country to another increases a lot, greenhouse gas emissions so it conducts to a real climate change. A second solution would be to become vegetarian :')
Just kiding, It is a real problem. There is a lot of solutions to reduce our consumption of meat, so to decrease the rate of methane produced by cows. We also should waste less food by not by not relying on the expiration date on food and stop buying a bunch of food. for example The robberies of stores for fear of not having to eat during epidemics, revolte me because a lot of this food ends up in the trash.
)
We should reduce our beef's consumption to reduce the greenhouse effect. It will be beneficial for our planet and our health because cow are too much fed with antibiotics.
It can lead us to some serious illness like cancers...
I believe that due to the increase of population and the willingness to inject antibiotics/steroids into our animals for mass production, it is going to make food unsuitable. It the states, this is seen as a "win, win" and not focused on until it becomes a problem.
One interesting/disturbing idea I read in an article (https://time.com/5890396/wildfires-pand … fer-world/) was that mass-producing animals for food using genetic engineering can lead to incredibly genetically similar animals that more easily spread diseases as well as causing pollution (as mentioned earlier in this thread). We need to work on cutting down on the mass production of animals for meat.
Reducing the amount of meat consumed will definitely have a huge impact. People eat a lot of meat which isn't necessary our survival. I don't think people shouldn't be allowed to eat meat anymore, it's just that any slight decrease will greatly decrease CO2 levels.
