Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Meats vs. Greens

Makenzie C.

I find myself guilty of being a meat lover eating it on average for two out of three meals a day. As I come to find out, it's not so great for the environment or even for my body on a nutritional level. I never gave it much thought that eating meat would leave a carbon footprint behind but low and behold, it unfortunately does. Food makes up about seventeen percent of the carbon footprint, with the transportation and food process included. Vegetables and fruit prove to have a much lower carbon footprint, thus making them a great substitute.
You can make a simple change in your diet and only eat meat once a day to make a global difference; Or if you really want to go for it, you can become a vegetarian. But I think I will stick with the latter.

Hello Mackenzie! My name is Natalia. I completely understand where you're coming from. When I was younger, I ate meat at least two out of three meals of the day. I had no idea that I was leaving such a large impact on everything around me by eating meat that often. Around four years ago, I became a vegetarian permanently and I have never regretted it. Before I decided to stop eating meat altogether, I struggled with my physical health and now, I'm healthier than I've ever been. I will admit that it was very hard at first because I was so used to eating meat with my meals and it can be difficult to  find healthy alternatives for protein.
