Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Compost and food waste separation

From seeing the results, it seems obvious that the more you eat, but also how you dispose of what you eat, can increase the food part of your carbon footprint. If I could use that knowledge and turn it into an effective societal food policy, I would say that everybody would get a strict limit on how much of a certain food they could buy, and also there would be people issued to every housing area, much like a garbage truck, that would load specifically food waste, and compost it. There would also be food waste separation facilities that can be used to sort out food waste that is good enough to feed the less fortunate. The effects of this policy would seek to increase food production, and also try and distribute food to everybody.

I think what you proposed would be an effective way to reduce food waste!Another major source of food waste would be restaurants and fast-fast chains, who get rid of all the food at the end of day(which is A LOT) and I believe it's important to impose some action upon those, such as reselling their near due date food at a lower price, or reduce the amount of ingredients their purchase by making it a need-based system.

Food waste is a huge problem so thanks for bringing this up. Before food even gets on your plate about 20% is thrown out because its not deemed "pretty" enough for consumers. I've seen some cool programs that buy the "ugly" food from farms and sell it at a discount to their community. Eco conscious restaurants can also take advantage of disfigured foods if they are creative with their recipes. Many foods can be blended, mashed, or juiced and taste just fine! I also think our government should prioritize more composting facilities. Our nation's soil is very unhealthy from constant tilling and pesticides but perhaps we could regenerate it by putting composted food waste to use. A whole other idea is converting waste into energy. Potentially hydrogen gas could be reformed from food waste and this would create a lot of potential for clean energy since hydrogen fuels only emit water.

I've just recently learned a bit more about food waste as a whole, and I am glad there are others that see how urgent the issue is. From what I know with past research and knowledge, I know a good chunk of food that is produced is usually thrown out for being, well, visually unappealing and even because the producers just made too much and overfilled the quota. It's a shame that food waste is still such a predominant issue in the world, and it especially contributes to our world considering the waste. Just producing the foods hurts the world enough, but the waste after sure doesn't help either.

Food waste is undoubtedly an issue that requires a change in the current "normal" lifestyle adopted by all across the globe to ease. Although my country is slowly forcing the implementation of recycle bins for different food waste in its neighborhood, most citizens wasn't educated on what each category entails so they disregard it entirely. There is a conspicious lack of awareness for how to conserve food in everday households that I think only an improve in the conveniency of recycling system can solve. But rules that concerns food waste is indeed hard to regulate. Stricter ones(such as giving out fines for college students who gets more than they can eat in a cafeteria) has proven themselves to be vulnerable to massive complaints from communities which only contributes to the widespread disregard to the topic.

Very short and to the point which is why i couldn't agree more. As someone who is from the United States, I'm embarrassed at how much food we waste. It is concerning how unaware Americans are about their food waste and yet many people continue to do it.
