It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Living in an asain household, I was taught not to throw stuff away unless it reaches its needs/ potential. Like for example, I finished a box of cereal and i’m about to throw away, but my parents used the box as a pot or border for the garden. Even using plastic bottle my family found ways to use them too. Preserving other sauces or even holding on to extra cooking oil that we don't use while cooking for other recipes. Sometimes when we throw tables away, we don't actually throw em away we ask our relative if they want to keep incase they need it for their own use.
