Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Food, Waste, and Hunger

Wasting food is an issue in today’s society. When going to get food/make food, only get/make the amount that you think you can eat. If you make/get too much food for yourself or made a meal that you do not like, go out on the streets and try giving your leftovers to a local homeless person. This way you aren’t wasting the food you made and you are helping out someone in need. A better way of throwing away organic foods like fruits and vegetables is composting. Composting is when you mix leftover organic foods with dirt and worms. The worms break down the food into rich soil for planting. Some foods you can’t compost are meat and milk products, baked goods, highly acidic food, greasy food, etc. One way to help solve hunger in the world is more farming and easier access to healthy foods. The more people there are in the world, the less land there is for farming. There should be more farming in urban areas, perhaps get a greenhouse for whatever city you are in so that city can easily grow more crops. When there is more healthy food being grown instead of fast food being sold, it will make the healthier food more affordable for people in the future. That is also what farmer’s markets and food banks are for. They provide food to your local community.
