Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

I think it is important that we do not waste our food. Many people take food for granted. We have to remember that some people do not have as much food as we do. We can help this problem by not wasting our food and eating everything on our plate at every meal. We can also compost our extra food after meals.

I totally agree with you, as someone who has taken food for granted on countless occasions. I can conclude that it feels wrong and guilty. You have so much more options then to throw away food. By throwing away food, it heavily contributes to the emissions of greenhouse gases. As the wasted foods get rotted in landfill, it produces a greenhouse gas called methane. Which is a big no. Especially considering the methane that hasn't been released into the atmosphere before it has been burned is extremely harmful towards the environment. To put it in a other perspective, methane contributes to climate change.

Other ways to save food is to proportion your food. You know your body the best, so you should know when it is too for you to consume. Another way to save food, is to give it to friends and family or even put it in the fridge and eat it the next day.

I totally agree with you food waste is such big problem. i think it's so important to just take what you can eat. I'm sure everyone knows the saying " your eyes are bigger than your stomach" and that i'm no stranger to that. One thing i think a lot of kids are not taught at a young is how to take the right amount of food for themselves, parent are doing it for you and can sometimes give you way too much.I also agree that composting is so important. it is so bad to be mixing food and garbage together.Compost that is on it's one can naturally rot and go back into the earth, but when it's mixed it's harder for the food to decompose and when it's sitting in the land fill it releases a greenhouse gas called methane, which is really bad for the environment and contribute massively to climate change.
