What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?
925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Foods Effects on our Carbon Footprint
Animal agriculture has become a huge methane producer which greatly harms the environment. This methane is produced through cows digestion as well as with the clearing and deforestation of forests to make room for even more animals. In fact about 70% of the Amazon Rainforest deforestation is used to make crops for animal feed and pastures. Not only do eating and creating more of these animals increase the carbon footprint but they also use many gallons of water and feed to be able to produce. For example, it takes about 4.5 gallons of water to create only one gallon of milk, 53 gallons of water to produce one egg, and about 660 gallons of water to create one hamburger!
I agree that animal agriculture is a huge contributor to the massive amounts of carbon and methane being pumped into our atmosphere. Recently we watched a documentary in class about the effects of animal agriculture and why the largest environmental groups won't talk about it, and it was very insightful. If everyone just lowered their meat consumption, less cattle are needed which means less methane and less deforestation for grazing land.
I also agree, animal agriculture is getting out of hand and we need to something now if we want to slow and stop the effects of climate change. something we could do is make more plant based meat, We have come to the point now where plant based products taste so similar to meat that we can hardly tell the difference. For example I had a plant based burger at A&W once and tasted arguably the same as a regular burger, we could also start using the food we grow for animals, and serve it to starving communities in 3rd world living standards.
I agree that animal agriculture is a very big problem in our society, it uses so much water and produces a lot of methane to make one meal. Where as if it was a plant based meal you would get so much more food and it would cost much less to buy and make. I think that as global warming gets worse and worse more and more people will begin to realize how much eating meat, cheese and milk... affects our carbon footprint. I hope that eventually meat has been swapped out for the many alternatives there are. Such as, plant based burgers and diary free milk and cheese. Some of it tastes the exact same as Jack Martin said.
I agree, animal agriculture is taking over! We use way too much land to bring animals into the world for the sole purpose of providing 5 minutes of sensory satisfaction. In order to convince of this we need to educate them on where their food is grown, the environmental impact, health implications, and people and animals that get taken advantage along the way. The farmers aren’t winning, the animals certainly aren’t winning, the poultry farmers forced to compete against each other by massive corporations, or the planet itself. What you chose to consume Has a direct impact on the demand for that product. You can help save hundreds or even thousands of lives over the course of your lifetime and as a result live regret free.
It is important the we are conscious about choosing local food. That reduces carbon usage in transportation. It is also important to eat less red meat as cattle emits a lot of methane into to atmosphere.
