Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

A food policy might eventually be a necessary step in combatting climate change, as 51% of all greenhouse gasses come from the agriculture sector. To put that into perspective, the entire travel industry, which only causes 13% of all carbon emissions. This means that all planes, trains, cars, trucks, and more are all less contributors than the agriculture industry. Not to mention the amount of land and water it uses, which we could instead be using to grow grains.

I completely agree. Not only would a food policy be a lot better for the environment, more efficient, less wasteful, and an easy solution that doesn’t cost a lot of money like other expensive alternatives, but it’s also good for your health. We would be reducing methane in the atmosphere if we went to a plant based diet. How would you convince people do commit to this though? And what steps need to be made towards making this happen?
