Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

For starvation in America I think restaurants should feed the leftovers to families in need instead of throwing it away. For example: America wastes roughly 40 percent of its food.1 Of the estimated 125 to 160 billion pounds of food that goes to waste every year. We could solve this problem if the government gives them a tax break. This should help the restaurant give some food to people in need.

In addition to restaurants, grocery stores should donate leftover produce and other food products to the hungry. Some stores such as Walmart do this to some degree but I think it needs to be taken more seriously.
