Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Recycling, reusing, repurposing fashion

There are real environmental benefits and savings from wearing recycled fashion. You don't just help the environment by recycling clothing, you also help the circular economy of your country. But let's get back to the environmet. Last week, I have read an article, which shows that purchasing 100 second-hand garments would save between 60 and 85 new garments. We are not just saving our money, we are also providing 14% reduction in carbon footprint for the cotton T-shirt and a 45% reduction of human toxicity for the poly-cotton trousers (and other cancer-causing chemicals). And I want to mention that vintage trends are coming back, so second-hand stores are the best place for that! Sometimes, we definetly see some nice piece of clothes on our friend, so why wouldn't we try swaping clothes and saving money and our planeth Earth? Also, sometimes a small DIY on old stuff can make it shine!

An interesting way to swap clothes with your friends is to have a clothes swap, where everyone brings clothes that are in good condition but they don't want anymore, and then people can take their clothes and they can take other peoples clothes. If there are any clothes left over, they could be donated to charity or sold to a second-hand shop.

Yes! That's great idea. It's like 3 in 1, you and your friends save money, you even help somebody else and you protect our planet (without h ?). Also, thank you for your reply! ?

I love thrifting! It is a really easy and fun way to help save the planet. I recently learned that it takes 1,800 gallons of water to produce the cotton in a pair jeans and 400 gallons to produce the cotton for one t-shirt! By thrifting you both save money, water, and the planet. My favorite item of clothing I've thrifted is a cotton button up that feels like linen.

That's an interesting fact! I also love spending time in second-hand shops and sometimes you can find great pieces of clothing (even limited edition)! Thank you for your reply, it made me happy! (✿◡‿◡)

I agree. Shopping second-hand can drastically reduce carbon footprints so there is really no reason not to do exactly that.

I'm glad that you agreed with these ideas about reusing clothing! Thank you for your reply! (●'◡'●)

To be honest, thrift shops have some nice clothes, they are comfy and cute <3

100 billion pieces of clothes are newly produced in the fashion industry each year. Yet, less than 1% of clothing is recycled into new textiles and fibers. In the last 15 years, clothing production has nearly doubled! Globally, people throw out around $460 billion worth of clothes! We can all help to reduce the damage of these wasteful habits. Instead of disposing of clothes you can repair, resell, donate, rent, and reuse clothes. And as aforementioned in this discussion, one great way of reusing clothes would be buying from a thrift store! If we all work together, we can reduce our harmful impact on the environment through the fashion industry!

It's shocking how much do we waste our money (and planet)...One good old quote says that alone we can do so little, but together we can do so much! Thank you for these facts and reply! ◉◡◉
