Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

What is the problem with throwing away food? How can we prevent it?

AlexisI

Californians throw away nearly 6 million tons of food scraps or food waste to landfills each year. Landfills release greenhouse gases which are harmful to the environment. High levels of methane gas and CO2 are generated by the rotting food scraps in the ground. These are greenhouse gases, which contribute to the process of global warming. To prevent this from happening, we can start by making a grocery list with only things that we know we will eat and not throw away. We should also not buy too much food at once, as it may rot, and will be throw away and taken to landfills

I think we can just prevent it by thinking about what you're going to cook before you're going to cook it to make sure that everybody can finish it so that there's no waste to throw away.
