Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Food Waste Percentages

brruBOD

Americans waste some of the highest percentages of food in the world. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, Americans wasted between 30 and 40 percent of all food in the country, this totaled to around 131 billion pounds of waste. India in what sources I could find had around 40% of their food wasted but the total in tons was still quite close to the U.S, this is in spite of the fact that India has a population over 3 times greater than the U.S. In China, the problem is better than in America and India but they still waste around 35 million tons of food every year, this number though is a much lower percentage than that of India or the United States. These statistics show that the most populous countries in the world are responsible for much of the problems regarding waste of possibly even world hunger. If the food wasted in these countries, which is around 200 tons, were used for the benefit of smaller nations and impoverished communities then many deaths due to starvation could be prevented.
