Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Food Waste

From personal experience one issue I see revolving around food waste is the lack of compost bins and composters. Waste management is the company that supplies our compost bins across North America and takes our food waste almost 3.6 million tons annually into a organic slurry that creates green energy for water treatment plants. I believe that Waste Management should continue to supply compost bins to more houses to create less food waste. One thing that households can do is compost themselves, according to the EPA 30% of waste is food waste and we can use food waste to compost. The EPA says to compost fruits, vegetables, paper, fireplace ashes, and a wide assortment of things and the compost created can grow your own garden enrich the soil, reduce methane emissions, and reduce the need for chemical fertilizer. Personally, my mom has been composting around 10% of our food waste in her own bin to continue to grow her own outdoor garden. In summary, large companies and small households are all able to contribute to cutting down on wasted food and instead use it for good.
