What's in an Engine
& Why? Engine valves are usually made from high strength stainless steels. The valves are subjected to high temperature and high wear conditions. The AISI/SAE grade of this steel is 446. This ferritic steel known as alpha-ferrite (BCC) phase, is cold worked to improve hardening and strengthening properties. The shaft of the valves experience the most wear, because of this, the shafts are in the martensitic form. The shafts are then friction welded to the valve head. |
