"What's in an engine and why?" website is designed to inform curious students about material science and engineering. The Material Science and Engineering department of the University of Washington, has made it a mission educate young students about why a material is chosen for different applications.

The rest of this website investigates different components of an internal combustion engine. The purpose of each component is described, from the engine block to the pistons.
