Human Bio/Stats Pre-Req Info & Approved Course Suggestions

Statistics
* Timeline – MSW DAY students should complete before classes start their 1st Autumn quarter. MSW EDP students
must complete before their 2nd Autumn quarter.
* Must be a course taken for academic credit at a regionally accredited institution.
* No time limit for how long ago the course was taken and no grade requirement as long as the student got credit for the course (may be taken S/NS or Pass/Fail.)
* Any course with “statistics” in the title will automatically be approved.
* A research methods course in another discipline with significant statistics content may also meet this requirement, but must include basic training in critical thinking via statistical concepts including: ideas of chance variation, probability, techniques in statistical design, sampling, inferences about major population characteristics and interpretation of data and report conclusions.

Human Biology
* Timeline – MSW DAY students need to complete before Autumn quarter of their 2nd year. MSW EDP students must complete before Winter quarter of their 2nd year.
* Must be a course taken for academic credit at a regionally accredited institution.
* Ten year time limit on taking the course and no grade requirement as long as the student got credit for the course (may be taken S/NS or Pass/Fail.)
* Almost all courses with a prefix of Biology, Physiology, Nutrition or Psychobiology will count as long as there is
content relating to humans. We are looking for science content related to how the human body works, develops,
responds to stress, reacts to substances/drugs, or similar content. If you have any question that your course will
count, please save your syllabus.
* In some cases, if the student took a class more than 10 years ago but has had extensive and recent training in human biology subject(s) (HIV/AIDS training, drug and alcohol training, first aid and CPR), then the student may use that course along with proof of more recent training to meet the requirement.

* You will need to provide documentation for meeting these requirements once admitted to the program, so please save copies of syllabi from the courses.
* ONLY if you are still unsure and would like preliminary approval of classes, please email syllabi and official catalog description tosswstsrv@uw.edu. Please save email response as you’ll be able to submit that as proof that your courses have been evaluated if you’re admitted. You will still need to submit official transcripts for the courses if you haven’t submitted them for admission already.
* Advanced Standing admits have completed these requirements as part of the foundation courses they’ve already completed.
