MLK Day of Service 1/21 – Project Leaders needed

On Monday, January 21st, the University of Washington will be celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a Day of Service (and a day off from school). In honor of Dr. King, the UW
Carlson Center has partnered with the United Way of King County to coordinate over 90 service projects with organizations all over the local community. We would like to invite you to make that Monday a Day ON and take on a leadership role serving the local community and honoring Dr. King’s legacy.

We are still in need of about 47 people to serve as a Project Leader for the
Day of Service — it is a fairly minimal commitment, and a fantastic way to
connect with and serve the city (in addition to being a great experience to
share on applications or a resume).

To serve as a Project Leader for the MLK Day of Service:

1) Choose a service project by visiting http://mlkjr.washington.edu and click on
the “Register for a Service Project” link. View the list of
available service projects and select one based on the description, location,
and the number of volunteers requested (you can recruit your own volunteers or
open the service project for anyone to sign up).

2) Contact the non-profit organization hosting the service project,
introduce yourself, and help them to communicate with volunteers who sign up
for the service project.

3) Attend the Kick-Off gathering in the UW HUB Ballroom on the morning
of MLK Day. There will be free parking, coffee, pastries, a few inspirational
speakers, and time to speak with your volunteer group before heading off to
serve. Please RSVP on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/events/496917983681542.

4) Join in this Nation-wide Holiday by remembering Dr. King and his
commitment to forge a common ground on which people from all walks of life
could join together to address important community issues.

We are hoping to identify leaders for the remaining service projects by January
15th — but the sooner you sign up, the more choices you will have of the
projects.

Happy 2013 and please let us know if you have any questions about this
opportunity by emailing mlkjr@uw.edu.
