This summer, Chris Rothschild (Researcher with Technology & Social Change Group – TASCHA) and I are directing an Exploration Seminar in Tahiti, French Polynesia. In this seminar, we will explore information within oral traditions, the value of oral traditions as knowledge systems, and the intersection of oral traditions and technology. This 6-credit seminar is open to all UW graduate and undergraduate students. Keynote Address: Changing Self-Destructive Habits: Pathways to Solutions with Families

Description: This presentation will discuss key aggravating factors that are contributing to the increase in self-destructive habits among youth and adults today, such as: self-injury, substance abuse, eating-distressed behaviors, problem gambling, and Internet and cyber-sex abuse. Research on self-change studies in these habit areas will be discussed. Strategies for transforming self-destructive habits into positive affirming habits through targeted interventions at the adolescent, family, and social network levels are covered. Open to the SSW community.

honor the social work careers of Arthur and Ruth Farber.

In a career starting as a practitioner, supervisor and executive, and culminating in 17 years as a
professor at the University of Washington School of Social Work, Arthur was a
courageous pioneer for social justice and individual empowerment.  In addition to his professional areas of

EDP SocW 501 Workshop: January 26th, 10:30 am- 12pm, 305 A/5

To continue the conversation from last week, this week’s writing tip again focuses on sentence structure. In academic and professional writing it is essential that sentences are not only grammatically correct, but also that they are varied in pattern.  This week I present information on the various types of sentence patterns. Good news for all writers: there are only nine basic sentence patterns in the English language.

Thus, if we can familiarize ourselves with the basic patterns, we can learn how to combine them to create more complex, unique sentences with ease. The following information is adapted from Chapter 7 in Webster’s New World English Grammar Handbook, Second Edition, with citation following. Read more

T(OUR) is looking for essays, poetry, short stories, and artwork of any kind (photos, cartoons, murals, sculptures, etc.) to publish in their magazine! Requirements for the April submissions are as follows:

  • must be based on a queer experience
  • must fit the theme “Youth” (you can do whatever you’d like with that theme)
  • max 2,500 words

We invite staff and students who might benefit from Toastmasters to the Husky Toastmasters Open HouseIt is scheduled for Thursday, January 24, 2013 from 12-1 p.m. in Schmitz 580.  We will have a guest speaker on the subject of hypnotism, who will share her story of using hypnotism to overcome mental illness. She will demonstrate excellent public speaking skills and share how Toastmasters has benefited her career.

Application due February 15, 2013 for NEW Study Abroad Program in Brazil.

The UW Disability Studies Program and the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine are offering a new study abroad course in Brazil on Disability in Limited Resource Environments during Summer – A Term 2013.  The program would be of interest to people studying topics like: global health, human rights, social justice, pre-health, social welfare, disability, politics, diversity, and sociology.

For the second consecutive year, we are pleased to announce the Ms. Foundation Fellowship. This one-year fellowship (Sept. 2013 to Aug. 2014), housed in the Ms. Foundation’s newly established Advocacy and Policy department, will fund a talented early to mid-career individual to pursue a project in support of the foundation’s ongoing work.
