NEW PARTNERSHIP: AAUW
The University of Washington Women’s Center Partners with the American Association of University Women!
The American Association of University Women (AAUW) empowers women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. Our nonpartisan, nonprofit organization has more than 150,000 members and supporters across the United States, as well as 1,000 local branches and 700 college and university partners. Since AAUW’s founding in 1881, our members have examined and taken positions on the fundamental issues of the day — educational, social, economic, and political.
PARTNERSHIP BENEFITS ARE AVAILABLE TO ALL UW SELF-IDENTIFYING WOMEN

“AAUW has been a leading charitable membership organization that empowers women and advances equity for women and girls through education, advocacy, philanthropy, and research since 1881. We have more than 150,000 members and supporters, 1,000 branches, and 700 college and university partners. Today, we’d like to remind you of the many ways partner membership benefits you and your campus community.

Here are a few of the programs that are currently available to college/university (C/U) partner members and their students:

  • Free e-student affiliate membership: All undergraduate students on your campus can join AAUW at no cost. Students will have access to AAUW’s exciting portfolio of member benefits, including all of our publications, discounted admissions to test-prep courses through the Princeton Review, discounts on numerous magazines, and much more.
  • Free national membership for you: As a college/university representative, your national membership is free (regularly $49). Each partner member can have two college/university representatives. Not sure if your institution already has two representatives? Give us a call at 800.326.2289 to find out.
  • More than $4 million in fellowships, grants, and various awards to graduate women each year: Every year on August 1, AAUW opens applications for graduate, postgraduate, and publication fellowships and grants. We want your students, staff, and faculty to be among those who receive these awards.
  • Approximately $1 million in undergraduate funding: Many local AAUW branches provide thousands of dollars in scholarships for undergraduate women. We want to offer your students our support!
  • Participation in the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders: Join us May 30–June 1, 2013, at the University of Maryland, College Park. Your students will have the chance to experience a variety of leadership workshops, hear from inspiring speakers, and network with graduate school representatives and other young women leaders from across the country. Please mark your calendar and budget for students from your school to take part in this outstanding leadership event. Discounted registration is available for AAUW C/U partners that send four or more students. Registration opens February 1, 2013.
  • The newest AAUW research: There is already a wage gap between women and men college graduates who are working full time one year after graduation, even after controlling for factors known to affect earnings, such as occupation, college major, and hours worked. Our latest report also discusses one immediate effect the pay gap has on many women: the disproportionate burden of student loan debt. We can help your faculty present this and other research in the classroom and provide support for campus-based programming on the topic.
  • $tart $mart salary negotiation workshops on your campus: AAUW can help you prepare your graduating women students for the job market and help lessen the gender pay gap. These workshops will teach your students how to negotiate their salaries and benefits
  • Lead across generations: Join us June 9–12 in New Orleans for the 2013 AAUW National Convention. Among our keynote speakers this year are MSNBC host and Tulane professor Melissa Harris-Perry and pay equity champion Lilly Ledbetter. You can join interactive workshops, attend insightful panels, and celebrate 125 years of AAUW fellowships and grants.

And if you’re looking ahead to next year, we offer plenty of programs to give you a jumpstart on 2013–14:

  • Priority application status for AAUW leadership programs: Did you know that AAUW offers campus programs like Elect Her, which trains young women to run for student government, as well as Campus Action Project grants to encourage student leaders to design and implement programs on topics like the gender pay gap and student loan debt? C/U partner institutions receive priority application preference for these programs — which are free for campuses to host! Your students also receive application preference for programs like the National Student Advisory Council. This year, all 10 members of the Student Advisory Council attend partner institutions.
  • AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund Campus Outreach Program grants: Educate students and faculty about sex discrimination. Download the LAF Campus Outreach Program in a Box for detailed instructions on how to plan and hold a campus event and apply for funding from LAF.
  • Connect with C/U representatives from other schools: Use our Member Services Database to reach out to your colleagues and to monitor how many of your students join AAUW as e-student affiliates. Connect with us (800.326.2289 or coll-univ@aauw.org) to get started.

Please remember to check our website regularly for information on our research and advocacy opportunities and other updates on issues that affect women and girls.
