HSERV 558: Tobacco & Public Health
This 1-3 credit course is offered in Spring quarter and is open to graduate students in all health and social sciences as well as public policy. This seminar style course offers a comprehensive overview of the history, health effects, policy, prevention and treatment of tobacco use, including:
• Epidemiology of Tobacco Use and Related Disease
• Health Disparities & Social Justice
• Tobacco & Global Health
• Health Economics & Policy
• Product Regulation & Harm Reduction
• Corporate Influence & Counter Marketing
• Addiction & Treatment

HSERV 556: Tobacco-Related Health Disparities
This 1-2 credit, online course is offered in Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters. The course integrates multiple disciplinary perspectives to address the pressing issue of disproportionate tobacco use and related diseases among marginalized populations, including topics such as differential explanations for tobacco use and possible interventions in groups defined by socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity and sexual orientation, and the links between tobacco use and mental illness, social stress, acculturation, and genetics.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Each year, the Tobacco Scholars Program offers fellowships (up to $1000) and career development stipends (up to $500) to master’s degree or pre-dissertation doctoral students in any UW School. Applications will be due in late October and will be available on the Tobacco Studies Program website.

PRACTICUM & THESIS/CAPSTONE OPPORTUNITIES
The TSP is able to connect students with resources for practicum and thesis/capstone projects related to tobacco prevention, treatment, and policy via the University, health departments and/or other research and practice organizations.

JOURNAL CLUB
This non-credit seminar meets once or twice per quarter, depending on how many TSP Scholars are chosen each year. Discussions are led by student scholars but are open to any interested students or faculty. See the TSP website for locations and topics.

LISTSERV & WEBSITE
The Tobacco Interest Group listserv features tobacco-related news and events, job announcements, and other resources from UW faculty, staff and students, as well as national tobacco control experts. The TSP website features free podcasts by leaders in the tobacco control movement, journal articles on emerging topics in tobacco control, and other resources.
