Announcements from the Graduate and Professional Student Senate

Professional Development vs. Exams
Have you had any difficulty navigating conflicts between exams and professional development opportunities? GPSS is working on finding ways to help alleviate that tension but in the meantime please know that there is a university policy in the faculty code that mentions professional conferences as a potentially legitimate reason to have an exam rescheduled, and you should feel you can advocate for your involvement in professional development opportunities when negotiating with professors about exam accommodations. If you are facing particular difficulty with a professor on this front, UW’s Office of the Ombudsman is there to help you resolve such issues and we encourage you to seek out this valuable resource.

Attend a Legislator Town Hall & Speak Up for Higher Education

The state has cut funding to the UW by 50% over the past three years. This year we have a chance to restore funding so that we can fund TA positions, stop tuition hikes, and retain our world-class faculty. But we need you to speak up!

The Washington legislature is half-way through its session, and the state budget will be released later this month. Over the next two weeks almost every state legislator will be holding a Town Hall in their district. Town halls are a rare opportunity to speak directly with our representative and influence priorities in Olympia for years to come. Legislators will be making important budget decisions that will affect students directly; they need to hear from all of us about the importance of funding higher education.

Below is a partial list of Town Halls in the Seattle area. If you’re able to attend or would like more information, please email Brian at gpssorgd@uw.edu. Don’t know your District? Click here to find out. For a complete list of Town Halls click here.
