Planned Parenthood Internship Opportunity

Education Intern
Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest has a unique and exciting internship opportunity to provide medically-accurate, comprehensive sexual health education in the high school, community, and college settings. This is an excellent position to gain experience in health education. The intern will receive extensive training and mentoring from our professional Community Outreach Educator and the education department. This is a six month internship that will take place October 2013 – March 2014. The position will be based at our Seattle office. We are seeking candidates who will be completing the internship as part of a college/graduate school project or for credit.

Responsibilities of the Internship:

  • Observe Classroom Presentations
  • Under the supervision of the Community Outreach Educator, teach medically accurate sexual health presentations to varying audiences
  • Observe weekly on-site peer education program, with goal of co-facilitating
  • Observe a Teen Council meeting
  • Observe family program presentations, attend training, and facilitate presentations
  • Complete a self-study module on sexual health
  • Observe lesson plan development
  • Develop a lesson/project plan for sexual health education and training and facilitate the presentation in the selected setting
  • Additional research and reporting projects as assigned
  • Follow all PPGNW volunteer program policies, complete paperwork and attend required volunteer trainings

Requirements for the Position:

  • The ability, with training, to present reproductive health information in a medically-accurate and professional manner
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • High degree of reliability
  • The ability to build rapport with youth
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Public speaking and presenting skills
  • Comfort working with people of varying socioeconomic backgrounds, sexual orientations, racial diversity, and religious backgrounds
  • The ability to work independently
  • Must be currently enrolled in college, with coursework at the junior level or higher

Required Trainings for the Role:

  • New Volunteer Orientation & Training on HIPAA, Managing Suspicious Encounters, and Mandatory Reporting
  • Orientation to the education department and job shadowing
  • Bi-weekly meetings with the Community/Outreach Educator

Required Commitment:
The intern must commit to six months, from October 2013 through March of 2014. The position requires 10-15 hours per week.
