Dr. Laura Kastner is a clinical psychologist who has conducted research, maintained a clinical practice and presented numerous workshops for parents. She is a clinical professor in both the psychology department and the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Washington.

In addition to her academic articles in the fields of child, adolescent and pediatric psychology, Dr. Kastner has co-authored four books: The Seven Year Stretch: How Families Work Together To Grow Through Adolescence, Houghton-Mifflin, 1997; The Launching Years: Strategies for Parents from Senior Year to College Life, Three Rivers Press, 2003; Getting to Calm: Cool-headed strategies for parenting tweens and teens, ParentMap, 2009; and Wise-Minded Parenting: 7 Essentials for Raising Successful tweens and teens, ParentMap, 2013.

Dr. Kastner is frequently interviewed in the media and presents lectures to the public on a wide-range of family and child development topics in settings across the United States.

Educational Objectives:
1. To describe principles from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) which are helpful in treating individuals with eating disorders.
2. To learn how achieving “wise-minded” approaches in the treatment of a client with an eating disorder represents a parallel process with parents who are attempting to relate to their child in more effective ways, both in terms of food and emotional interactions.
3. To understand how recovery from an eating disorder is similar to optimal adolescent development.

IAEDP has applied to the Washington State Psychological Association (WSPA) for approval of 2 hours of Psychological Continuing Education Credit. The Washington State Psychological Association (WSPA) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. WSPA maintains responsibility for this program and its content. Workshops offered by WSPA are recognized as continuing education activities under the rules adopted by the Washington State Examining Board of Psychology and the Licensed Counselors Advisory Committee. Pending approval of 2 CEUs for LMFTs, LMHCs, LASWs, LICSWs, Certified Counselors and Associate-Level Practitioners through Washington Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (WAMFT). Pending approval of 2 CEPUs for Registered Dietitians and Dietetic Technicians-Registered through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CRD). CME Category II Credit offered.
