Summer Internships – Alliance for a Just Society

Right now, we are especially looking for full-time summer interns. Our interns work side-by-side with staff on reports, white papers, blog posts, and more.

We are looking for interns to help with our Job Gap Economic Prosperity Series, which looks at what it takes to make ends meet and whether families are actually getting by (past reports are available at thejobgap.org). Interns for this project would need to have strong data and research skills. We may also have need of interns without the data skills but with strong research/writing skills and interview skills, as well. Interns should have an interest in public policy and/or research and a desire to work toward racial, social, and economic justice.  While we prefer graduate students, we are also open to undergraduate interns who have strong skills and are able to give us strong references.

SUMMARY

The Alliance for a Just Society seeks public policy interns throughout the year. Ideal candidates are public policy, public health, or related graduate degree students. The Alliance offers internships for each academic semester or quarter to work on a variety of policy products.

About the Alliance

The Alliance for a Just Society is a national organization that provides public policy support, training, and research to member community organizations throughout the country. The Alliance supports low- to moderate-income grassroots activists in their fight for social and economic justice. See www.allianceforajustsociety.org for more information.

Internship Description

Public policy internships provide an opportunity to learn about real-world policy issues and influence public policy at the state and national levels. Interns may be asked to work on public policy position pieces, published reports, talking points, press releases, fact sheets and flyers, surveys and research protocols, and national policy research papers. Interns also work with local grassroots organizers, and play a role in campaign development, outreach, education, and training.

Qualifications

Prefer master’s degree candidates in public policy, public health, or a related field, or Juris Doctor candidates. Must have excellent analytical, oral, and written communication skills; strong attention to detail; ability to work independently and as part of a team; and a commitment to racial, economic, and social justice.

Logistics, how to apply

Interns will work out of the Alliance headquarters in the Columbia City neighborhood of Seattle, WA. The internships, which are volunteer positions, may be full- or part-time, for a minimum of 10 weeks, at a minimum of 12 hours per week. The Alliance will work with your school to ensure that you receive academic credit, and can support you in seeking funding for your position through your school or from an outside funder.

Please email a resume, a 5-10 page writing sample, list of references, and cover letter describing your interest in the position and any related experience to Allyson Fredericksen, at allyson@allianceforajustsociety.org. Please email Allyson or call 206-568-5400 with questions about the internship program. Applications accepted year-round, with placement based on fit between applicant and current policy projects.
