Burke Museum Community Dialogue on Sports Mascots, Logos and Race – April 23 at 5pm

Sports Mascots, Logos and Race

An interactive community dialogue

Thursday, April 23, 5pm

Kane Hall 220, UW Campus

FREE FOR ALL

As part of its current exhibit, Here and Now: Native Artists Inspired, the Burke Museum was excited to locate and display the Kwakwaka‘wakw mask that inspired the Seahawks logo. The mask has generated pride among 12th fans and Indigenous communities, and has inspired contemporary artists to create works re-imagining the Seahawks logo.
While we join in celebrating and honoring the historical roots of the Seahawks logo, we also want to engage in deeper conversations about issues of representation, appropriation, and race with mascots and logos. Why do professional and community sports teams, like the Cleveland Indians and Washington Redskins, continue to use ethnically and racially offensive mascots despite decades of protest by Native communities and allies?
Join the Burke Museum for an interactive community conversation where you will have an opportunity to hear from academics, educators, and artists about the use of mascots, and to consider your own range of comfort/discomfort.
Panelists include:·         Stephanie Fryberg (Tulalip tribal member), Associate Professor, American Indian Studies, University of Washington

·         Shaun Qwalsius Peterson (Tulalip/Puyallup tribal member), Artist

·         Ed Taylor, Dean & Vice Provost of UW’s Undergraduate Academic Affairs, University of Washington
