The Department of Global Health has a full week of great events for anyone interested in global health. Our marquee event is the Global Healthies Award Ceremony on Monday, May 11. We also have a Career Fair with more than 20 organizations, a Trivia Night with Dr. King Holmes, several information sessions and discussions, and more.

Monday, May 4
“Finding an Internship for Global Health Undergraduate Students (Brown Bag Session)” l 12:00p.m.-1:30p.m., Husky Union Building (HUB), Room 214
The Global Health Minor will host a brown bag lunch panel to hear students speak about their previous experiences with internships in the Seattle Area. This is an event for UW undergraduate students who are interested in careers in Global and Public health and would like to get an experience through an internship. Students will learn the best ways to secure an internship opportunity as well as some of the interesting opportunities available within the area’s many Global Health service organizations. We will provide you with a catalog of local organizations that are looking to fill internship and volunteer positions and are looking for students to be involved.
This is a free event for UW students and there will be light refreshments.
“Health Actions for Women Practical Strategies to Mobilize for Change: A Panel Discussion” l 5:00p.m.-7:00p.m., Foege Genome Sciences Building, Foege Auditorium, Room S-060
Join Hesperian Health Guides, Health Alliance International, the Global Health Resource Center, and University of Washington’s School of Public Health for an engaging panel discussion and reception event to celebrate the launch of Health Actions for Women, discuss health equity and share experiences in global organizing and education to improve women’s health and rights. The discussion will be followed by a reception and light hors d’oeurves upstairs at Vista Cafe.

This exciting annual event is designed to be a learning opportunity about the work local global health organizations do, what skills, education and experience are valued by these organizations, what the hiring process are like, and more. Representatives from over 20 local-global health organizations will be available to answer students’ questions and to offer insightful information about career paths in the global health field.

“Returned Peace Corps Volunteers Panel” l 6:00p.m.-7:30p.m., Husky Union Building (HUB), Room 145
Peace Corps Volunteers in the health field work at the grassroots level in communities around the world promoting nutrition, maternal and child health, water sanitation, and the prevention of HIV, Malaria, and other illnesses. Join us at this panel discussion to learn about Health Volunteers’ experiences in the field, and where their careers have gone since.

“What’s Next? Former Students Share Their Experiences Searching for a Job in Global Health” l 3:30p.m.4:30p.m., Harris Hydraulics Building, Room 303
This lecture is a part of International Training and Education Center for Health (I-TECH) Global Health Practice Series. This participatory discussion series is held twice a quarter to discuss issues and challenges related to the project life cycle, leading and managing in complex settings, and professionalism. This is an opportunity for interested students, staff and faculty to dive into the complexities of real-world global health practice. Each session will be facilitated by global health practitioners who will be bringing in their direct experience of working in the field.

Join us for a fun night of global health trivia to show off your knowledge of a wide range of topics. Come socialize with faculty, staff, and students and win great prizes! Dr. King Holmes Director of Research and Faculty Development at the Department of Global Health, and Becky Bartlein, Program Manager, TB, at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will be your emcees for the evening! Beverages and snacks will be provided.

“Department of Global Health (DGH) Global Healthies: Student and Trainees Poster Session and Awards Ceremony” l 4:30p.m.-7:00p.m., Husky Union Building (HUB), South Ballroom
Join us as we celebrate excellence in global health and honor exceptional students, residents and trainees in the Department of Global Health. Poster session presenters will present their work and are eligible for one of five US$500 awards. After the poster session, The Global Healthies Award Ceremony will be held at 6pm, followed by socializing reception. 4:30 p.m-6:00 p.m. poster session; 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. awards ceremony.
