SSW MSW Blog

Our student-led team from the School of Public Health, in conjunction with Hall Health, is collecting information about student health care and health insurance at the University of Washington, Seattle Campus. It is integral that we receive enough responses to make the survey relevant as the results have the potential to inform policy-making decisions in the future. Having as many students respond as possible increases our chances of compiling representative data about students at UW and your needs in relation to health insurance. Please note that this survey and any information derived from it is not representative of the University of Washington administration.

Answers will remain anonymous and confidential. At the end of the survey, everyone will have a chance to provide their email address to be entered to win from multiple drawings. We will be raffling off a $100 Amazon Gift Card (x1), $50 Amazon Gift Cards (x4), and $20 UW Bookstore Gift Cards (x2). Email address and survey data will not be connected.

To access the survey, please follow this link: http://tinyurl.com/studenthealthsurvey2017

The survey will run until the end of the month. Winners of the raffle prizes will be drawn at the end of the month, once the survey has closed.

Please let us know if you have any questions. We can be reached at student.health2017@gmail.com.

This survey is a collaborative survey to learn more about social work graduates across the country – and you have a good chance of getting an amazon gift card!

Dear Social Work Graduating Class,

Congratulations on your upcoming graduation!  Now that you are graduating, the social work community could use your help to inform the social work education and practice community about the career pathways of new social work graduates and the job market.  You can also earn a $20 Amazon gift card!

To better understand the trends in the work and and practice experiences of social workers, eight major social work organizations have come together to engage the George Washington University Health Workforce Institute (GW-HWI) to conduct a survey of individuals completing a social work degree in 2017.

The 2017 Social Work Graduate Survey will be distributed in September 2017 using an individualized link emailed to participants.  GW-HWI is inviting you to participate in this survey.  If you are interested, please provide them with an email address that will still be valid in September using the link below.  Please respond by 7:00 p.m. EDT on May 12, 2017.  GW-HWI will then contact you at that email address in September to take the survey. http://j.mp/2nQa6Y2

Your participation in the survey in September and your decision to register for it now are entirely voluntary. Registering for the survey now does not require you to complete the survey in September.  If you do complete the survey in September, all of your responses will be kept confidential and reports and papers based on analysis of this information will only use aggregated survey data.  Although GW-HWI will ask for your email address, name and social work program when you click on the link above, this information will be kept separate from the survey responses you give in September and will not be linked to them in any way.  Your email address will be deleted from their records at the end of the study unless you agree otherwise.

In appreciation of your participation in this important study, the first 1100 people completing the September survey will receive a $20 Amazon gift card [500 BSWs, 500 MSWs, 100 PhD/DSWs].  GW-HWI expects around 1000 responses to the survey, so your chances of being awarded the gift card are good!

Should you have any further questions or comments, please feel free to contact Ed Salsberg, Principal Investigator for the study, at esalsberg@email.gwu.edu.

GW-HWI and the partnering national social work organizations greatly appreciate your time and consideration in agreeing to participate in this survey.

Thank you for your interest in this important study for the social work community. Congratulations again on your forthcoming graduation!

Join us on Saturday May 13, 2017, for a one-day symposium centered around the topic of urban homelessness, hosted by student-led group Design Justice Seattle.

What are the missing links that designers need to address when engaging with place-making, affordability, and social justice? How can we challenge stigmas and assumptions about homelessness? What actions could be effective and what could be detrimental? At what scales, in which locations, and on whose timeline?

A morning panel will include voices from people who have experienced or are experiencing homelessness, and professionals in architecture, housing development, public health, sociology, and urban planning. Lunch will be provided courtesy of Urban@UW. An afternoon charrette will serve as a platform for those interested in shaping the conversation to develop questions, challenge stigmas, and formulate responses that inform designers of the urban built environment. The deliverable, in the form of developing a framework for a design competition on urban homelessness, will work to carry this conversation forward as a living collection of questions and considerations intent on better informing the process of equitable design.

Our aim is to close the gap between existing knowledge and our city’s future urban dynamics. We believe that better practice will result from a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach that strengthens the link between scholarship, research, and professional experience. Please join us for a day of crafting an integrated body of ideas that aims to shape Seattle’s evolution into a more livable city.

Volunteer for Muscular Dystrophy Camp!

As part of MDA’s lifesaving mission to help kids live longer and grow stronger, we provide a summer camp program for kids ages 6 – 17, at no cost to their families. Kids living with neuromuscular diseases that limit strength and mobility often face many unique challenges. These diseases progressively weaken muscles, often taking away everyday abilities like running, walking, hugging and even breathing.

Each year, over 85 kids from the Western Washington area attend MDA Summer Camp in Gig Harbor, WA. Kids look forward to MDA camp year-round, and they almost all agree “it’s the best week of the year.”

More than half of our camp volunteers are typically students from local colleges pursuing a variety of majors and career paths. Our volunteer team also includes many fire fighters, paramedics, and medical professionals from our community.

Here’s a short video about volunteering at MDA camp: MDA Summer Camp

See https://villagereach.workable.com/j/EE56ED6696 for the full job description and instructions on how to apply.

Interested candidates can feel free to reach out to me for more information. I started my career at VillageReach in a very similar position while I was a graduate student at UW.

Senior Manager, Health Systems

Note: This is an hourly research position NOT through the university, so DAY and EDP students are both eligible to apply (and it doesn’t come with a tuition stipend or health insurance through the UW because it isn’t a UW Graduate Student Research Assistantship.)
