Job Title: UW SafeCampus Support Specialist

Tempory position: September 2017-June 2018

Hours per week: 15-19.5 hrs/week (during SafeCampus operating hours: M-F 8am-5pm)

Pay Rate: ~$20/hr

Location: Roosevelt Commons West, 4300 Roosevelt Way NE

UW SafeCampus Support Specialist

The mission of the University’s SafeCampus program, launched in 2007, is to help prevent and address violence and its impact on campus through awareness, prevention, support, triage, threat assessment, outreach and education. The Violence Prevention and Response Program (VPRP) – more commonly known as, SafeCampus– is part of the Human Resources organization and serves as UW’s coordinating office for violence mitigation activities across the UW.

Key services of the SafeCampus program include:

  • Responding to calls to the SafeCampus telephone line that provides for centralized reporting of  Behaviors of Concern (behaviors which might indicate the propensity for future violence, including suicide concerns), 24 hours/day, 7 days/week
  • Connecting individuals with appropriate campus or community resources
  • Coordinating and facilitating threat assessments that provide for collaborative review of issues and development of coordinated response and risk abatement plans
  • Conducting case management activities to assure implementation and to monitor effects of risk abatement plans to inform plan modification
  • Assisting and coaching members of our community in their response to Behaviors of Concern, including suicide concerns or UW Prohibited Behaviors
  • Establishing and maintaining effective connections among existing programs and services to maximize the effectiveness of safety measures and enhance responsiveness to victims of violence and individuals with concerns regarding potential violence within the UW community
  • Providing education designed to cultivate awareness and promote early prevention efforts

Position Responsibilities:
The Support Specialist supports the program in a variety of ways. A primary function of the role will be answering and responding to calls to the SafeCampus telephone lines during regular business hours. This position requires the ability to conduct preliminary intake of situations, gather information on safety issues and concerns, assist individuals in varying levels of distress, and determine the level of response needed. This position will additionally support the SafeCampus program’s team of 3 staff by completing administrative tasks as assigned.

Key Responsibilities include:

*SafeCampus Incident Intake:

  • Intake incidents reported to SafeCampus, via phone and email, from members of the UW community (students, staff, & faculty)
  • While assisting callers provide a highly professional response and retain confidentially of all information disclosed
  • Ensure that emergency or immediate threats of violence are properly triaged to the local police department

*Record Keeping:

  • Utilize the SafeCampus Incident Database to maintain records of reported situations including initial reports, action steps, and follow-up information
  • Enter notes of team members into the Incident Database as needed
  • Utilize the SafeCampus training database to record training attendees

*SafeCampus email account:

  • Respond to SafeCampus general emails as needed
  • Generate and send post-training email communication

*Marketing:

  • Monitor program marketing supplies
  • Distribute marketing supplies to departments when requested
  • Assist with posts to Facebook account
  • Assist with outreach tabling events

*Training:

  • Assist with scheduling, logistics, and communications for trainings
  • Create training flyers, Catalyst surveys, & email templates for department

*Reports:

  • Assist with the creation of monthly and quarterly SafeCampus reports

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in social work, public heath, public administration, or related field (open to BASW seniors)
  • Interest in the fields of violence prevention, threat assessment, behavioral intervention, power-based violence, or related social work or public heath disciplines
  • Professional phone skills—Demonstrated ability to respond in a supportive manner, with empathy and with sensitivity and awareness to persons from diverse cultural, ethnic and social backgrounds, values, attitudes and languages
  • Demonstrated strong oral and written communications skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively, as a part of a team, with individuals and groups from diverse identities, cultures, backgrounds, and ideologies
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs including MS Access
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check

Desired:

  • Primary prevention or response experience in the areas of sexual assault or relationship violence preferred, including experience in triaging concerns related to actual or potential violence
  • Experience working on a crisis hotline
  • Successful experience working in a large multifaceted institution of higher education
  • Knowledge and understanding of violence prevention and intervention, including sexual assault/relationship violence/stalking, and strong theoretical and/or practical understanding of interpersonal violence
  • Experience in writing basic Microsoft Access queries and developing ad hoc reports
  • Familiarization with UW programs and services
  • Familiarization with the SafeCampus program.
