Your donation will provide training, support, and resources for a high school community to develop a comprehensive suicide prevention program, with a greater awareness of mental health and social and emotional learning.
The event is FREE and dog friendly, and features food, inspirational speakers, musical acts, and a drawing for prizes provided by our sponsors. T-shirts will be available for sale at the vent.Let’s walk, let’s talk, let’s break the stigma.

Hosted by Huskies for Suicide Prevention and Awareness (HSPA), Forefront Suicide Prevention, and the UW School of Social Work.

In coordination with the Evans School and Nonprofit Executive Leadership Institute (NELI), we will be hosting Beth Kanter in Parrington Hall. Beth is the author of many books about, and for, nonprofits and the social sector. In her most recent book, “The Happy, Healthy Nonprofit: Strategies for Impact without Burnout”, she lays out an action plan for doing high-impact work in a way that is healthy for organizations and individuals.

This workshop will be an interactive session teaching students about self-care and how to avoid burnout while doing work that changes the world. Register at evans.uw.edu/kanter.

Join us May 14th for Students Against the Bomb: A Nuclear Weapons Activist Training.

In this Administration, youth are faced with something most us thought we’d never have to deal with in our lifetime: the threat of a nuclear war. Many students today are wondering – how does this relate to me, and what can I do about it?

Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility (WSPR) and Beyond the Bomb UW are holding a student activist training on nuclear weapons issues. We’ll discuss the basics of activism, nuclear weapons 101, and how nuclear weapons are a local issue in Washington state. The workshop will include skills and practice to help you be an activist against nuclear weapons. You’ll leave with transferable skills to take meaningful action right here on campus, and be a life long advocate.

Rising seniors, graduating seniors, alumni, graduate and professional students at UW are encouraged to apply for the Luce Scholars Program (http://www.hluce.org/lsprogram.aspx). This is a great opportunity for those with little or no prior experience in, or education about, Asian countries to add this valuable perspective to their future career interests! Please share widely with students in your programs (with the exception of Asian Studies – apologies!).

UW is able to nominate 3 students/alumni per year to compete nationally for the opportunity to spend 12 months in Asia. The program provides stipends, language training and individualized professional placement in Asia for fifteen to eighteen young Americans each year.

During the current application cycle for the 2019-20 program, applicants must be American citizens who, by July 1, 2019, will have received at least a bachelor’s degree and will not have reached their 30th birthday. Applicants should have a record of high achievement, outstanding leadership ability, and a clearly defined career interest with evidence of potential for professional accomplishment. Those who already have significant experience in Asia or Asian studies are not eligible for the Luce Scholars Program. (Eligibility criteria are set by the Henry Luce Foundation; additional details are provided in the Program Summary below.)

Information sessions covering the program basics, application and nomination process will be held:

    May 15, 2018, 3:30-4:30pm, Allen Library Auditorium

    May 23, 2018, 1:30-2:30pm, MGH 171

RSVP to attend at either session at https://expo.uw.edu/expo/rsvp/event/234

Campus application deadline: Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018

“Black Men, Emerging Adulthood, and Criminal Desistance in an Urban Community”

Charles Lea

School of Social Work, UW
Monday May 7th
12:30 – 1:30 pm
Q&A until 2:00 pm
Social Work Building
Room 305A

ABSTRACT: Despite reductions in the U.S. penal population, young adult Black men who are transitioning into adulthood remain at increased risk of recidivating. While research has advanced our knowledge about factors that are positively associated with criminal desistance, less is known about the events, stages, and processes that formerly incarcerated young adult Black men perceive to support their desistance from crime. As such, with Critical Race Theory as the guiding frame, this paper examines formerly incarcerated young adult Black men’s perceptions of the transitions that facilitate their desistance from crime within the urban context.
