PUBPOL 570: Foundations of Social Policy

Instructor: Bill Zumeta
Meets: Mondays and Wednesdays, 4:00pm – 5:20pm
Description: This course is an introduction and overview of the broad field of social policy (within the U.S. primarily). The course will provide an overview of structural factors affecting the nature and evolution of social policies in the U.S. as well as some coverage of recent developments in demography, inequality and politics that are affecting social policy issues and policymaking today. We will consider the role of policy analysis tools and instruments in the social policy sphere and offer at least an overview of American approaches in the various specific policy areas that fall under the broad umbrella of social policy including: income transfer and antipoverty policies; policies relating to families and social services; health, housing and criminal justice policies (these three will be touched upon fairly briefly); and education policies from early childhood through postsecondary education.

Hello UW Advisers,

We are contacting you from Harborview’s Injury Prevention and Research Center in hopes that you might be able to circulate the following opportunity to your students:  We have an NIH-funded and paid internship called the INSIGHT Summer Research Program.  Our program is comprehensive, and in addition to offering fantastic opportunities for students to work on an independent clinical research project with a school of medicine faculty mentor, we also offer injury related seminars, field trips (King Co Medical Examiner’s office, Airlift NW for example), and social activities for our full cohort of student researchers.

Attached is a one-page flyer with an overview of our program, which is geared towards undergrads entering their junior and senior years, as well as 1st year graduate and medical students, but accepts motivated students of all levels.  We also offer a $3,200 stipend to those accepted.

Our website follows below, where interested students can find our application portal and all the details of the program:

INSIGHT Application Page

Our application portal is open now through January 15th , so please encourage your students to apply soon!

Thank you so much for your time, and please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

With warm regards,

The INSIGHT Summer Research Program
