The Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowship provides undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students with financial support to develop fluency in less commonly taught languages and expertise in the regions in which these languages are spoken. Students from all UW departments and schools are encouraged to apply. Apply by January 31, 2022.
Languages:
Contingent on funding from the U.S. Department of Education, the six National Resource Centers of the University of Washington will offer Academic Year and Summer FLAS Fellowships in the following languages:
Arabic, Bangla, Bosnian/Croatian/Montenegrin/Serbian, Burmese, Chinese, Hebrew, Hindi, Indigenous languages spoken in Canada, Indonesian, Inuktitut, Japanese, Kazakh, Khmer, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Tagalog, Thai, Turkish, Urdu, Uyghur, Vietnamese.
Graduate Students only: French (intermediate or advanced only).
Eligibility:
The FLAS Fellowship is available to current and incoming UW students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. It is available to students who will study one of the listed foreign languages at the intermediate or advanced level while receiving the fellowship.
Every year the Center for Global Studies awards between 12-15 fellowships to UW students.
