Seeking Reps for SSW Student Advisory Council – Nominate Yourself or a Peer by 10/17

Dear SSW Students,

Are you committed to making the SSW a more socially just learning community? Do you want to develop your leadership skills? The SSW Student Advisory Council (SAC) is looking to fill vacancies for this academic year.

SAC is a group comprised of student representatives from each cohort and staff/faculty advisors. SAC has worked hard to create a myriad of student centered changes at the UW School of Social Work. SAC has worked with the SSW administration to continue to develop shared governance, a process where students would have increased input in the running of the School of Social Work. SAC is where students like you can build the confidence needed to advocate for future clients in large bureaucratic organizations by advocating for your cohort in the complex university systems. SAC also brings energy to community building efforts and creates opportunities for engaging with your classmates and building connections, such as the SAC Spring Fling  hosted in May.

  • Time: You can anticipate SAC requiring a regular time commitment. Although SAC members only meet twice a month, you can expect to be in regular contact with SAC members to complete project commitments. That may include answering emails or attending small group meetings with fellow SAC members, students, faculty or staff.  Meetings are held on Zoom, Mondays 6:30-8pm.
  • Passion: We are recruiting people who are passionate about lasting change at the UW. The SSW we have today is the product of many iterations of SAC striving to make the SSW an inclusive and just learning community. Although the work of SAC can feel like baby steps, it is essential to making large scale change. You will be working on projects that may not come to fruition in your time at UW but will certainly better the SSW for future cohorts and will ultimate improve the quality social workers in the field.
  • Representation: Along with our own passions, it is important that we can stand aside and speak for a variety of perspectives and needs of your cohort. This commitment also includes being visible as a representative, being in regular conversation with your cohort about their experience of the program or university and being a source of information about the activities of SAC.
  • Collaboration: SAC requires an ability to collaborate honestly and earnestly with students, faculty and staff. This includes being communicative about your sustainable capacity and availability.
  • Leadership: Taking leaps of faith and trusting in yourself to speak on behalf of others is an essential skill in the field of social work. SAC will give you opportunities to build confidence in a supportive environment of other learners.

SAC will meet on Mondays generally twice a month, from 6:30pm-8:00pm, on Zoom. The meeting schedule for the 2022 – 2023 academic year is as follows:

All interested students, please nominate yourself!  This is a great opportunity to be involved in the governance of the SSW. In the event of multiple nominations, there will be a formal vote via survey, which will be sent out through email.

To self-nominate or nominate a classmate, please submit your information here [docs.google.com] by Monday, October 17th, 2022. Your answer will be attached to nominees’ names on the voting survey for fellow cohort members to read.

Who are you and how does who you are relate to your vision for how SAC can promote social justice and address student needs at the SSW?

If you have additional questions, please reach out to me at npg324@uw.edu or to current SAC member Jenn Dela Cruz at jennaldc@uw.edu.

We look forward to your involvement and questions.

Thanks,

Nicole
