Carol LaMare Info Session – 1/23

Carol LaMare Zoom Information Session Monday, January 23, 2023 from 5:30 – 6:30PM (See details below).

The Carol LaMare Scholars Program is an initiative of the UW School of Social Work designed to train specialist year MSW students in work with people with cancer and other serious illnesses, or who are at the end of life. Founded in 2005, the program provides:

  • A specialized clinical practicum in oncology, palliative care or medical settings working with people and families facing serious illnesses.
  • A retreat the weekend before Fall quarter begins which focuses on issues relevant to working with people with life limiting illness, including both practical skills and personal, reflective work.
  • A year-long seminar that uses a health equity and anti-racism lens to develop practice skills focused on micro/meso/macro assessment, clinical interventions, organizational advocacy and self-care.
  • Introduction to a network of over 120 former Scholars who are practicing in settings in the Seattle region at organizations such as the University of Washington Medical Center Oncology and Palliative Care programs, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, Seattle Children’s Hospital Oncology and Palliative Care programs, Evergreen Hospice, Virginia Mason Oncology Center, and Swedish Cancer Institute.
  • Scholarships for students who are accepted into the program and matched with a Carol LaMare eligible practicum during the Specialist year.

The Carol LaMare Scholars Program is intended for social work students enrolled in the MSW Day or EDP Clinical Specialization.

Successful applicants demonstrate an established and strong commitment to social work practice in settings with patients who are living with cancer or a significant life-limiting illness, commitment to social justice and equity, and leadership potential. Previous Scholars often have had personal experiences with illness, have had family members who have been seriously ill or who have died, and have a passion for working with elders (although some placements are also focused on children).

Previous students have been most excited about the chance to have a year-long integrative seminar as well as more informal coffee hours in which to build their relationships with other colleagues and with the instructors and to have conversations and talk about their practicums and about the joys and challenges of this work.

If you are an EDP1 student who has an interest in oncology or end of life care and who would like to connect earlier with us around questions you may have, you are welcome to attend the informational meeting in January, and encouraged to contact J’May Rivara with questions you may have).

We are hosting the Carol LaMare Zoom Information Session Monday, January 23rd from 5:30 – 6:30PM when you will be able to meet the Carol LaMare Faculty (Taryn Lindhorst, LCSW, Ph.D. & J’May Rivara, ACSW, LICSW) as well as a few Carol LaMare scholars past and present. Application details will be described in the Information session and will be sent to interested students after the information session in a flyer.  As the Faculty who will be your Liaison with your CL Field Site, please email J’May as needed with specific questions related to practicum.
