Student Legal Services (SLS) is an on-campus law office that provides a safe and confidential space for all UW-Seattle, Tacoma, and Bothell students who have legal questions or concerns. They offer free 40-minute consultations on a broad range of issues, such as tenant and labor rights. Students can also hire SLS for ongoing representation for a low hourly rate. They are located in the Husky Union Building (HUB) 306. Read more about their work on their website.

Eligibility

SLS can assist only currently enrolled UW-Seattle, UW-Tacoma, and UW-Bothell students (undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree-seeking) who have paid the Services & Activities Fee as part of their tuition. If you are not enrolled for the current quarter but you were enrolled last quarter and you intend to enroll next quarter, then you are still eligible for our services. Newly admitted students are currently enrolled once they have registered and are taking classes. SLS cannot represent a student when the opposing party is another UW-Seattle, Tacoma, or Bothell student or UW entity.

The UW Food Pantry provides UW students, staff, and faculty with supplemental, shelf-stable groceries and seasonal fresh produce for no cost. Anyone holding a Husky ID is eligible to receive support. See more information on their website.

Note to bring your own bag! Striving to be as sustainable as possible, the UW Food Pantry encourages visitors to bring and reuse their bags.

This opportunity may especially appeal to those interested in the involvement of ordinary citizens in policy formation processes, particularly in view of barriers to participation from poverty or disability and with regard to climate change – and students excited about a chance to carry out collaborative research that has tangible public impact.

MSW students, consider this new JSIS course for your Out-Of-Department Electives.

The Jackson School has just added a new course to Winter’s schedule: JSIS B 438 – International Conflict through Film and Art. Guest speakers will include filmmakers, artists, and activists engaged in solidarity movements in the Middle East. See below for more information and please share widely!

This year, the course focuses on how conflicts in the Middle East (specifically Palestine and Israel, this year) are portrayed in film and art, examining them from local, national, and global perspectives. With current events in the region as a backdrop, we’ll explore how filmmakers, artists, and craftivists respond to these conflicts. We’ll also analyze how visual and oral media convey compassion, empathy, and complexity while fostering solidarity and community in the context of regional struggles. – Instructor: Andrea Arai Email araia2@uw.edu

MSW students, if you are interested gaining field experience in lobbying and advocating at the state level, consider joining the Health Equity Circle for a day at the WA state capitol.

What is Lobby Day?

Every year on President’s Day, Health Equity Circle brings ~100 students from the schools of public health, nursing, medicine, law, social work, and more to Olympia to voice support for or against the passage of specific bills that are critical to health equity in WA. This is a wider collaboration with other health professional schools within WWAMI. Health Equity Circle is currently researching bills that will be presented in the house or senate during this legislative session to determine which positions we should take. We are looking for volunteers that will meet with individual policymakers in small groups to tell their stories and influence votes. Not only is Lobby Day a chance to advance policy around social justice issues, but it’s also an excellent opportunity to gain lobbying skills, become familiar with the legislative process in WA, and meet students from across the state.

When is Lobby Day?

Monday, February 17th, we will be meeting with legislators to in Olympia advocate for bills that advance health equity this year. Transportation will be provided.

What is the time commitment?

Volunteers will be required to attend a 1.5 hour training session in early February to learn about our legislative positions, how to speak to representatives, and learn the itinerary of the whole day. Lobby Day is a full day commitment. We will meet in Olympia at 8 am (if carpooling, we will meet at 6:30 am at UW) and we will be done around 4 pm.

You do not need to be affiliated with Health Equity Circle to attend. Anyone – undergraduate or graduate – who is interested in advocating for policy that affects health outcomes is welcome to join. Please spread the word to your classmates & colleagues!

If interested, please fill out this Google Form: https://forms.gle/GCtYtScDNAJLLhi38

If you have any questions please contact prichris@uw.edu
