Library Fall Newsletter for December 2024

Dear School of Social Work faculty, staff, and researchers,

Hello from the UW Health Sciences Library (HSL)! As Fall Quarter speeds towards the end, please enjoy some updates about your library systems and resources.

Access library resources like databases, books, and journals by starting at the Health Sciences Library webpage.

Here is more information about accessing library resources off campus.

  1. Micromedex and More Replacing Facts & Comparisons eAnswers

Due to licensing terms that do not meet the UW’s risk tolerance, the Health Sciences Library has replaced Facts & Comparisons eAnswers with alternative tools like Micromedex (fully incorporated into the School of Pharmacy-provided point-of-care tool DynaMedex) and Natural Medicines.

For a list of alternative resources and information on Libraries licensing principles and collections updates, see the full announcement here. Please reach out to hslresources@uw.edu with questions about this change.

  1. Computer Lab remodel

The Learning Commons Lab will be unavailable through mid-2025 due to renovation work. We will not accept reservations for this period. We will continue to accept reservations that would take place in May 2025 or later.

During renovations to the Learning Commons Lab, T216 is available as a temporary lab. T216 can accommodate 20 users for computer-based exams and is available for both rental and for student drop-in study use.

For questions or to reserve T216 for exams, please email hsllabs@uw.edu.

  1. LibKey

LibKey is a suite of tools that has streamlined the process of getting the full text of UW Libraries’ journal subscriptions. LibKey Discovery is now built into the ibraries catalog, and makes it easier to get articles you find in a database or the catalog. The LibKey Nomad browser add-on provides quick access to full-text when browsing the web, Google Scholar, PubMed, UpToDate, and several other sites. It even connects to many of our e-books.

  1. Health Sciences Library Unveils Display Honoring UW Nobel Laureates

We are excited to announce UW School of Medicine’s installation of a new permanent Nobel Laureates display at the Health Sciences Library. This exhibit celebrates groundbreaking achievements in science and medicine by highlighting the remarkable contributions of our School of Medicine’s esteemed Nobel Prize recipients.

Visit the third floor of Health Sciences Library to explore this inspiring exhibit, which pays tribute to the brilliance and dedication of these distinguished University of Washington Nobel Laureates.

  1. New anatomical models

An Allen Opportunity Award has enabled us to expand our collection of anatomical models available for use while in the library. Since our previous models all showed healthy structures, many of the 25 new models include conditions so that students can learn to identify them, such as the Colon: Common Pathologies and the Skin Cancer Trainers. A list of the full collection and their descriptions can be found at the 3D Anatomy Models guide.

  1. Text mining

Online Text Mining Support – – 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month-ONLINE
Text Mining Student Specialist Trisha Prasant will now offer text mining drop-in office hours. Learn about text mining techniques, data preprocessing, and analytical methods for extracting insights from textual data.

  1. Personnel changes

Departing: Our Collections librarian Leslie Gascon left UW at the end of October 2024. Leslie was an expert on research impact and EndNote, and in building and sustaining connections with faculty. We’ll miss her!

Changing roles: As of August, Leah DeSantis is now our Social Work librarian. Leah held the position of temporary Public Health librarian since Spring 2023, as well as supporting the School of Pharmacy, and led the successful launch of the UW’s Li Lu Library.

Joining us: Please welcome Amber Mak, our new temporary Reference & Research Services Librarian! Amber will be working with all 6 health sciences schools on research consultations, reference questions, and instruction. Amber is an alumnus of the UW’s Information School, where she was selected for the Ruth Worden award for Student Excellence in Library and Information Science. She previously worked for the upper campus UW Libraries with a focus on reference, accessibility, diversity and equity for her projects.
