Oxfam America Volunteer Opportunity

Oxfam America is an international relief and development organization that creates lasting solutions to poverty, hunger, and injustice. Together with individuals and local groups in 94 countries, Oxfam saves lives, helps people overcome poverty, and fights for social justice. We are one of the 17 affiliates in the international confederation Oxfam.

Oxfam is currently accepting applications for two of our volunteer leadership programs – the Oxfam Action Corps and the CHANGE Initiative. The Oxfam Action Corps (www.oxfamamerica.org/actioncorps) is our community organizing program provides the opportunity for local activists to develop essential leadership skills as social change agents while encouraging civic engagement and heightening their awareness of their own cultural worldview within their local community. The CHANGE Initiative (www.oxfamamerica.org/change) is our national student leadership and organizing program.

Members of the Seattle Oxfam Action Corps will engage in grassroots organizing that supports Oxfam’s GROW campaign—to change the currently unsustainable global food system which causes hunger and crippling inequality that will worsen as population grows—to create systemic changes to empower (and in many cases, re-empower) growers (such as local farmers) and consumers to end abject poverty and expand capacity for new demand. Community members who volunteer with the Oxfam Action Corps:

  • Connect with Oxfam staff to receive year-round support, including campaign materials, strategy tips, and advice on community organizing;
  • Build community to cultivate grassroots leaders;
  • Lead a coordinated charge to improve national legislation; and
  • Deepen local community resources for fighting poverty and injustice.

CHANGE offers rising sophomores and juniors at U.S. based colleges & universities the opportunity to develop essential leadership skills as social change agents while encouraging civic engagement and heightening their awareness of their own cultural worldview. Students selected as CHANGE Leaders:

  • Engage in community service & advocacy efforts that address critical community needs;
  • Find their own leadership identity;
  • Develop confidence and the skills to effect positive, lasting social change;
  • Connect with Oxfam staff and have access to expert skills based training, resources, materials and year-round support; and
  • Become part of an active and growing, global network of peers and alumni working on social justice issues.
