Microaggression Learning Circle

This is a 5 or 6 week (students decide) learning circle for graduate students to come together and discuss what microaggressions are and how best to handle them in a classroom setting.  Space is limited and the format is one in which all participants contribute as teacher student.  Tiffany recently received her MSW from the UW School of Social Work.

“Identifying and Responding to Microaggressions in the Classroom”
Facilitators:  Tiffany Woelfel, School of Social Work, UW Seattle; and Brian Tracey, School of Marine and Environmental Affairs, UW Seattle

How do you know when microaggressions have occurred in your classroom? What do you do when a student informs you that you have offended them or others? If you observe a faculty member doing something that may offend students, how can you communicate your concerns in a productive way? While microaggressions are a popular topic of discussion on campus right now, they still frequently occur in classrooms. As graduate student instructors, we may find ourselves perpetrating microaggressions, having them perpetrated on us, and/or needing to address microaggressions between others, including students. As a group, we will explore microaggressions as they relate to different aspects of identity and intersectionality and review recent research on how they impact students and the learning process. We will work together to tackle difficult classroom scenarios and brainstorm ways to ensure that inclusive and respectful language is used across campus.

Graduate students are integral to the learning process at the University; we serve as role models for students and are typically invited by faculty to take on various leadership roles in educational settings. Given our importance to the learning spaces on campus, it is our aim to promote conversations among graduate students that propel instruction at the University of Washington into a new era where higher education upholds and exemplifies a commitment to social justice. Join us.
