I wanted you to know that Kaiser Permanente is the official health sponsor of this year’s USA Special Olympics being held in Seattle July 1-6. We are in need of over 12000 volunteers – both medical and non-medical. This is a great opportunity for social work students to get involved in the community and have experience working with athletes who have intellectual disabilities.  I would like to personally ask if you can share this opportunity with the MSW students.

Often Special Olympic competitors don’t have the time or resources to seek proper health care. The Healthy Athletes program allows participants to receive much needed health screenings and treatment during the duration of the USA Games. These free services are critical to athletes during the competition and positively impact participants long after the Games are over. Medical volunteers can make a huge difference by lending their expertise in one of these seven areas:

Special Olympics Healthy Athletes®

Fit Feet

FUNFitness

Health Promotion

Healthy Hearing

Opening Eyes®

Special Smiles®

Strong Minds

I’m promoting the Strong Minds program to the social work community, we need social workers to help teach athletes healthy coping skills for stress.  I’ve attached a pdf with some information on Strong Minds program.  Please feel free to email me questions about it.  Feel free to sign up family and friends, this is a memorable event and a volunteer position for everyone!

MDA Summer Camp
2018 – YMCA Camp Seymour
Gig Harbor, WA
June 23rd – 30th

MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association) is seeking people to volunteer at MDA Summer Camp this summer!

  • Apply to be an MDA Summer Camp volunteer counselor or medical staff team member and help improve the lives of kids in their community who have muscular dystrophy and related diseases that severely limit muscle strength and mobility.

MDA Summer Camp is a life-changing experience for kids with muscular dystrophy and related muscle-debilitating diseases.

  • Kids with muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy and related life-threatening diseases face daily challenges that often make “just being a kid” difficult. As their muscles progressively get weaker, children may lose basic functions such as walking, dressing, eating, talking or even breathing.
  • MDA Summer Camp gives kids ages 8-17 the freedom to be kids with others who are just like them during a life-changing week of fun and friendship — all at no cost to their families.
  • Through the magic of summer camp, MDA offers a world of possibilities and awesome adventures to campers — from swimming, adaptive sports, camp dances and more. It’s truly a place where kids can live unlimited.
  • MDA relies on the support and dedication of volunteer counselors who are by campers’ sides day and night so that they can do all the fun activities that summer camp offers.
  • Counselors, who serve as a “buddy” for the week, push wheelchairs, lift and transfer youngsters and provide assistance with activities as needed. They also participate in activities with the campers.

Why you should volunteer at MDA Summer Camp:

  • Volunteering at MDA Summer Camp will enrich your life and inspire you in ways you never dreamed possible. You will help kids discover new interests, build self-confidence and experience the independence of being away from home in a safe environment where barriers don’t exist.
  • You will enhance your résumé when applying for scholarships, college, graduate school, employment, etc.
  • You will develop important leadership skills while simultaneously giving back to your community.
  • Camp provides a remarkable opportunity for volunteers to meet new people, build lifelong friendships with fellow counselors and create lasting memories for children living with muscle-debilitating diseases.

The Center of Excellence in Substance Addiction Treatment and Education (CESATE)

of the VA Puget Sound Health Care System, Seattle

announces openings for the

Interprofessional Fellowship in Substance Use Treatment

1-year full-time advanced training in substance use treatment

The goal of the Interprofessional Fellowship is to provide clinical and didactic experiences through which recent professional graduates from several clinical disciplines become more skilled in working therapeutically with individuals with substance use disorders and become more familiar with the unique contributions that their professional disciplines provide.

A biopsychosocial model of substance use disorders provides the rationale for the Addiction Treatment Center’s interprofessional team approach.  As such, it encourages staff to consider physiological, psychological, behavioral, and sociocultural factors in the assessment, treatment planning, and therapy processes.

We expect to have positions for two Social Workers for the 2018-2019 year.  All fellows must be U.S. citizens.  The fellowship begins Sept. 04, 2018.

* Social Workers must have completed a Master’s Degree from a School of Social Work accredited by the Council on Social Work education.

*Applications are due March 12th, 2018.

We expect to select fellows within six weeks of the mailing deadline.

The Fellowship is Directed by John S. Baer, Ph.D.

Greetings from Lower Valley Crisis and Support Services,

Our agency is in need of volunteers to help respond to crisis calls that come in after hours and on weekends.  Once you complete the training, you can let us know what your availability to take calls.  It can be once a month, a certain day of the week, etc.

The Lower Valley Crisis & Support Services (LVCSS) will be offering our volunteer core training for those wishing to make a difference in the community.

LVCSS is a non-profit, United Way agency serving Yakima County. We provide crisis services and education for community members on issues regarding sexual assault/abuse and domestic violence.  The agency relies on community volunteers to help run its 24-hour hotline.

Volunteer advocates respond to calls on a 24-hour crisis hotline by providing emotional support, crisis intervention, referrals and information to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, as well as their non-offending family members.

All calls are dispatched to the volunteer’s home or cell phone through the agency’s answering service to keep their personal contact information confidential.  Hospital advocates respond to sexual assault or domestic violence calls from our local hospitals and law enforcement agencies.  This training is designed to give volunteers the tools they need to work with victims and their families.   The training begins January 22nd through February 11th, 2018 at our agency.   The entire 7 days of training must be completed in order to become a volunteer advocate.

The training dates and times are as follows:

Monday, January 22nd 5:00pm to 8:30pm

Wednesday, January 24th 5:00 to 8:30pm

Monday, January 29th 5:00pm to 8:30pm

Wednesday, January 31st 5:00pm to 8:30pm

Friday, February 9th 4:00pm to 8:00pm

Saturday, February 10th 8:30am to 4:00pm

Sunday, February 11th 8:30am to 12:00pm

For more information about volunteering, please contact us at 509-837-6689 or email lgarcia@lvcss.org<mailto:lgarcia@lvcss.org>.

Are you interested in doing an internship in Washington, D.C. and earning UW credit?

The Washington Center (TWC) runs an internship program in Washington, D.C., that is open to all UW undergraduates in all majors and provides comprehensive service, including internship placement and housing. Placements include government agencies, corporations, nonprofits, museums, arts organizations, and international organizations. Hundreds of UW students have participated in this program since UW’s affiliation in 1977, and many made connections that led to post-degree employment.

WA State residents receive a $2500 scholarship from TWC and may be eligible for additional TWC scholarships to help defray the cost of attending. UW international students and residents of other states receive a $1000 scholarship and overall pay less for this program than the estimated cost of attending UW for a quarter. Additional discounts may be available for students interested in the autumn or spring semester programs.

TWC’s facilities are accessible to students who have disabilities. In addition, their Disability Services Coordinator will assist with accommodation at the internship and programming sites.

These are the upcoming application deadlines (for a full list of organizations that have earlier deadlines see http://www.twc.edu/node/11029):
