Symposium Keynote Event | Date: 1pm, April 16 | Walker Ames Room (KNE 225) | Seattle campus (Zoom option available)

Faculty, staff, and students from all UW campuses are invited to register for the 20th annual UW Teaching & Learning Symposium. This year’s keynote event explores the theme of empowering students through teaching and will feature:

  • Cate Denial – Bright Distinguished Professor of American History | Bright Institute at Knox College
  • Kevin Lin – Assistant Teaching Professor, Computer Science & Engineering
  • Maya Smith – Associate Professor, French & Italian Studies, and Associate Dean for Equity, Justice & Inclusion
  • Rachel Song – doctoral student, Psychology

This event will focus on the theme of “empowering students” and will consist of two parts: 1) a keynote talk by Cate Denial, an award-winning scholar and author of the forthcoming, A Pedagogy of Kindness, and 2) a panel discussion between Denial and 3 UW educators.

Save the date for GSEE’s Spring Soirée on Wednesday, May 22 at the wǝɫǝbʔaltxʷ – Intellectual House on UW Seattle’s campus. Spring Soirée is an annual signature event that celebrates continuing and graduating GSEE students with a reception and informal cording ceremony. Graduate students from all three campuses are welcome to attend. More details will be forthcoming. 

Join Forefront Suicide Prevention for this free one-hour virtual event where we hear from Paige Gaines of 911 Sane Jane. A powerful storyteller and advocate, Paige will share her own mental health challenges, her experience with suicide, and her journey to educate on the uniqueness of these challenges within black communities.

This event, and the entire Suicide Prevention &… series, is presented in partnership with the Washington State Department of Health. Please find the date and speaker bio below.

Speaker Bio:
At just 33, Paige Gaines has already made a name for herself nationwide as a sought-after speaker and prominent mental health activist. In 2021, she received NAMI Georgia’s Young Leader Award for her work as a mental health advocate and pioneer. Paige has been featured in several well-known publications, including People Digital, Black Enterprise, Stigma Fighters, and the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Clinic Journal. With a bachelor’s degree in public relations, she understands the importance of community education and awareness. She’s a two-time suicide attempt survivor diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of 22, and a Certified Peer Specialist and Mental Health Coach – making her life’s journey full of adversity, strength, and impact. After feeling invisible and without a purpose for the first 24 years of her life, Paige is now the founder and CEO of 911 Sane Jane, an organization dedicated to providing a voice for the voiceless through education and storytelling.

The Department of Global Health is sponsoring a webinar on The Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza and Public Health Responses on Monday, February 26 from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. PST. It is open to others across the UW campus and the community. 

The goal of this webinar panel will be to provide a more detailed understanding to the UW community of the public health aspects of the crisis and the role of global health professionals addressing current and anticipated health needs of the population.

Speaker Bios

Dr. Gina Campelia (she/they) is an assistant professor in the Department of Bioethics & Humanities at the University of Washington School of Medicine and a clinical ethics consultant for UW Medicine Ethics Consultation Service. In scholarship, teaching and practice, Dr. Campelia translates ethical theories to clinical practice, mediating or facilitating resolution of conflicts in values. Publications concentrate on critical theory and counteracting race-based and gender-based oppression in healthcare, as well as expanding the applications of relationality, empathy, epistemology, and feminist ethics to clinical ethics.

 Laura A. Katers PA-C holds dual appointments in addiction medicine and pain management at the University of Washington Medical Center. Her lens has always been behavioral medicine and she developed a keen awareness of how pain and substance use are often both undertreated in an inpatient setting. In 2021 she was asked to co-develop UWMC’s first ever addiction medicine consult service, which was launched in January 2022. In addition to her clinical work, she teaches residents and clinical year PA and ARNP students and has been actively engaged in research with the Harborview Injury Prevention & Research Center (HIPRC).

Incoming, continuing, and graduating University of Washington Master of Social Work students are invited to attend a conversation with four amazing alumni from across specializations and professional interests. Please use this as an opportunity to learn more about what alumni have accomplished since they graduated and identify potential short- and long-term social work career pathways you might be interested in. There will be some pre-planned questions but feel free to bring your own too! See below for details and we hope to see you there.

This affinity group holds space for folks who self-identify as BIPOC, including Black, Indigenous, People of Color, Brown, Asian & Pacific Islander, Mixed & Multiracial folks.  Our general goals/intentions for our space:

  • Carve out space to center the BIPOC student experience
  • Offer mutual support
  • Build community and create space to connect around hobbies/interests
  • Provide resources and self-development opportunities for members

We also encourage our BIPOC community members to join our email listserv to stay in touch!  We will be regrouping at least once over the summer to plan for next year – RSVP if you are interested in joining these community efforts!

Dr. Susan Barkan Retiring
Dr. Susan Barkan, Principal Research Scientist and the Director of Research at Partners for Our Children (P4C) has recently retired from the UW. She worked with P4C for the past 15 years as a Research Scientist and was Affiliate Faculty with the UW School of Social Work. Congratulations, Susan!

National Institute of Mental Health Call for Nominations
The NIMH seeks nominations for the James S. Jackson Award, given to exceptional intramural and extramural minority mental health and mental health disparities researchers who exemplify and demonstrate excellence in scholarship, mentorship and learning environment, and community, inclusivity, and outreach. Nominations are due May 22, 2023.

Changes coming to ClinicalTrials.gov Website
The National Library of Medicine has been working to modernize the ClinicalTrials.gov website, and have incorporated user feedback to improve how visitors search, view, and download information about clinical trials. These changes will take place in June, 2023.

Here in the Office of Graduate Student Equity & Excellence (GSEE, formerly GO-MAP), we have been excitedly preparing for our annual end-of-year celebration: Our Spring Soirée!

What is GSEE?

As a reminder, GSEE (formerly GO-MAP) provides support and resources for graduate students from historically underrepresented communities. For over 50 years, GSEE has created and maintained safe spaces for students from historically minoritized racial and ethnic groups to connect and form community with other students across disciplines.

 Spring Soirée

Our Spring Soirée is an end-of-year signature event for our GSEE students. The event will be held on Wednesday, May 24th at the wǝɫǝbʔaltxʷ – Intellectual House. We will have graduating student speakers, appetizers, treats, a live DJ, and an informal cording ceremony for graduating GSEE students. Doors will open at 5pm PT and the program will start at 5:30pm PT. Please be sure to RSVP here.

We’ll be meeting via Zoom on Thursday, May 18th, at 6pm. All students, staff, faculty, and administrators of color are welcome to join.

Please join the UW Center for Human Rights for our annual Spring Symposium and Awards Celebration on May 11, 2023, featuring UWCHR’s Strategies for Massage Parlor Workers’ Rights project. This event is free and open to the public! 

In collaboration with Massage Parlor Outreach Project (MPOP), this project centers community-led campaigns and research to find systemic ways to improve Asian migrant massage and sex workers’ living and working conditions in the Chinatown/International District and the greater Seattle area. Hear from MPOP members, organizers, and researchers about their work.
