An awesome organizer from 350 Seattle will be holding the training, which will have 2 parts:
1. Organizing (this will include a power structure analysis)
2. Skills/Relational Organizing (paired with the former)

The hope is that folks will all leave with an understanding of what community organizing around climate justice is, and why folks should do it.

Please feel free to reach out to either Cha Cha or Akiksha if you have any questions: akic@uw.edu; csawyer@uw.edu

About the workshop: This three hour webinar is designed for social workers and behavioral health providers who are adapting to our digital society. Join our webinar to understand how you can provide continued care, amid COVID-19. Through an engaging presentation, hands-on learning, and an interactive Q + A, we’ll teach you how to utilize the right devices, policies, and practices for teletherapy services you can use to limit risk and maintain ethical practice.

  • During the pandemic, are you working from home in contrast to a traditional office?
  • Are you struggling to adapt to the digital shift that COVID-19 has heightened?
  • Do you feel lost overwhelmed with the thought of shifting to teletherapy, and you don’t know where to start?
  • Are you confused or lacking clear information about when and how to transition back to normal, post-COVID? What should your new normal even be?
  • Are you able to access the same technology/software at home that you had in your office?
  • Is this your first time trying out phone and video therapy?

If you’re trying to navigate these changes alone during COVID-19, you’re probably feeling overwhelmed. By attending this webinar, you’ll learn that you’re not alone. We have solutions to help you confidently maintain confidentiality.

In This Webinar…

  • Discuss the new federal guidelines for phone and video therapy
  • Learn how to prepare your clients/patients for the day-to-day challenges that come with remote practice
  • Identify specific criteria to choose the right software for electronic communication, with coworkers and with clients/patients
  • Establish a security protocol to ensure security safeguards of client/patient information while working from home
  • Cover the essentials you’ll need to add to your client/patient consent form for teletherapy
  • Explore opportunities and understand barriers to practicing across state lines

Here is a link to the April 7th session, the general “how to find fellowships” webinar for graduate students, where current and prospective graduate students from all disciplines could learn to locate fellowships relevant to different stages of graduate study and create plans for applications: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1towpwLtkxGTiTIvMExwWyXMsf3oidbn-/view?usp=sharing

There are a few things to know about this link:

  • The presentation is not downloadable. It is view only through this link and only people with the link can view it.
  • The link will only be available for one month.
  • The Grad Office and GFIS are working on new funding videos that our offices can more permanently host on our sites. While we appreciate the Zoom recording as a temporary way to assist students, the newer content, we hope, will be more sustainable, accessible, and ultimately more helpful to UW’s vast and diverse graduate student populations. We can provide updates on this newer content later in spring quarter.

Coming soon will be a recording of the April 14th session for international, DACA, and non-DACA graduate students.

Though students without US citizenship can attend the April 7th session, they may find the April 14th session more informative. Here again, current and prospective graduate students from all disciplines will learn to locate fellowships relevant to different stages of graduate study and create plans for applications. Students will walk away with lists of key resources and search strategies.

I warmly invite you to join me for a 30-minute presentation of my qualifying paper titled, “A Social Work Argument for a Just Minimum Wage.” This will take place via Zoom at 12:15 PM on Wednesday, March 18th. You can find the Zoom meeeting link at the bottom of this announcement. Take a break, grab your lunch, and listen in!

Abstract
Laws that increase minimum wages above both the federal level and state levels have recently passed in over 40 localities across the United States including Seattle. Prominent arguments for and against raising the minimum wage center on economic concerns. The purpose of this paper is to go beyond the narrow win-lose perspectives popularly on offer, pitting alleviation of poverty against the viability of enterprises. There is room in the minimum wage debate to advance ethical and moral justice arguments from a social work perspective. In this historical and theoretical treatment, I discuss social workers’ past battles for wage justice, and why today social workers can confidently argue that wage rates so low as to jeopardize human dignity or subsistence are unjustifiable. Ultimately, this paper is an invitation to social workers to resume leadership and scholarly discourse on wage justice, especially with the current-day resurgence of minimum wage laws.
