Dear School of Social Work Community,

There is a current budding partnership between the Foster School of Business and School of Social Work to pilot a Philanthropy Fellowship program for 2017 – 2018.

The hope is to create an experiential learning environment in which students can have a hands on, interdisciplinary learning opportunity that increases knowledge of foundations and philanthropic practices. Additionally, it is an educational networking opportunity between social work students, business students and philanthropic foundations.

We are currently asking for social work students to complete this survey to gauge interest and feedback for such a program. The survey should take no more than five minutes to fill out and there is an opportunity to win a $20 Starbucks gift card.

Please see survey here.

Our student-led team from the School of Public Health, in conjunction with Hall Health, is collecting information about student health care and health insurance at the University of Washington, Seattle Campus. It is integral that we receive enough responses to make the survey relevant as the results have the potential to inform policy-making decisions in the future. Having as many students respond as possible increases our chances of compiling representative data about students at UW and your needs in relation to health insurance. Please note that this survey and any information derived from it is not representative of the University of Washington administration.

Answers will remain anonymous and confidential. At the end of the survey, everyone will have a chance to provide their email address to be entered to win from multiple drawings. We will be raffling off a $100 Amazon Gift Card (x1), $50 Amazon Gift Cards (x4), and $20 UW Bookstore Gift Cards (x2). Email address and survey data will not be connected.

To access the survey, please follow this link: http://tinyurl.com/studenthealthsurvey2017

The survey will run until the end of the month. Winners of the raffle prizes will be drawn at the end of the month, once the survey has closed.

Please let us know if you have any questions. We can be reached at student.health2017@gmail.com.

MAP Scholarship
deadline May 1
The Multicultural Alumni Partnership (MAP) awards scholarships to UW undergrads and grad students who need financial assistance to continue progress toward a degree at the UW.

The UW has passed the Student International Travel Policy (SGP Chapter 211). This policy outlines three important pre-departure requirements for all students traveling abroad for official academic purposes:

  1. Register international travel with the Office of Global Affairs (OGA)
  2. Purchase comprehensive medical and evacuation insurance while abroad
  3. Request a waiver for travel to high risk destinations

Please visit the OGA website for more information and FAQs.

The UW offers a wide variety of opportunities for student engagement abroad, including foreign study programs, international exchanges, research and service learning opportunities, and international internships. Student health, safety, and security are our top priorities. Administered by OGA, the policy establishes health and safety requirements to minimize undue risks to UW students. The spirit of this policy is threefold:

  1. Help ensure that UW students have a safe and successful academic experience abroad
  2. Raise awareness so that all UW students know about international health and safety resources and services when traveling abroad
  3. Institutionalize long-standing best practices that help ensure the University’s ability to consistently provide efficient and effective, 24/7 support to all students studying abroad

We ask that you take these steps to support this effort and this new policy:

  • Inform students, faculty, and staff about this policy and the importance of working with the Office of Global Affairs before traveling abroad
  • Stay safe together! Let us know how we can work together to raise awareness and advocate for safe and positive academic experiences abroad

Thank you for your time and support. If you have any questions or concerns please let me know.

Dance Chance is a school-based program offered by Pacific Northwest Ballet and provides standards-based dance instruction in partnership with local schools. Students are in grades one to eight.  Dance training for students from diverse backgrounds is a priority.  Some evidence indicates that the dance training has a significant impact on general education and life skills.  MSW students are sought to assist in interviews of parents, teacher, students and dance instructor to identify impact on social, academic, and emotional skills.  The pilot study involving initial interviews is time sensitive and will support a mixed method evaluation to take place after the interviews.  Payment is $15/hr. Work can begin immediately.

The Addictions Treatment Center of the VA Puget Sound Health Care System, Seattle

announces openings for the

Interprofessional Fellowship in Substance Abuse Treatment

1-year full-time advanced training in substance abuse treatment

The goal of the Interprofessional Fellowship is to provide clinical and didactic experiences through which recent professional graduates from several clinical disciplines become more skilled in working therapeutically with substance abusers and become more familiar with the unique contributions that their professional disciplines provide.

A biopsychosocial model of addictive behaviors provides the rationale for the ATC’s interprofessional team approach.  As such, it encourages staff to consider physiological, psychological, behavioral, and sociocultural factors in the assessment, treatment planning, and therapy processes.

We expect to have positions for two Social Workers for the 2017-2018 year.  All fellows must be U.S. citizens.  The fellowship begins Sept. 18, 2017.

* Social Workers must have completed a Master’s Degree from a School of Social Work accredited by the Council on Social Work education.   Applications are due April 1st, 2017.

We expect to select fellows within one month of the mailing deadline.
