Every UW student has a story — about how he got here, what she’s discovered, how they’ve learned to stand out, or fit in. The UW students who tell their stories the best can win $1,500, $1,000 or $500.

The My Husky Story video contest is seeking student-created videos that show how UW students spend their time outside of class. A panel of judges will award $1,500 to the first place winner and $1,000 to the runner-up. The student video with the most likes on Facebook will win $500. Read more

Write with Might #14

Posted under Academic Resources, Just for fun on Jan 22, 2013

Dear writers,
EDP SocW 501 Workshop: January 26th, 10:30 am- 12pm, 305 A/5

To continue the conversation from last week, this week’s writing tip again focuses on sentence structure. In academic and professional writing it is essential that sentences are not only grammatically correct, but also that they are varied in pattern.  This week I present information on the various types of sentence patterns. Good news for all writers: there are only nine basic sentence patterns in the English language.

Thus, if we can familiarize ourselves with the basic patterns, we can learn how to combine them to create more complex, unique sentences with ease. On Monday, January 21st, the University of Washington will be celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a Day of Service (and a day off from school). In honor of Dr. King, the UW
Carlson Center has partnered with the United Way of King County to coordinate over 90 service projects with organizations all over the local community. We would like to invite you to make that Monday a Day ON and take on a leadership role serving the local community and honoring Dr. King’s legacy.

We are still in need of about 47 people to serve as a Project Leader for the
Day of Service — it is a fairly minimal commitment, and a fantastic way to
connect with and serve the city (in addition to being a great experience to
share on applications or a resume). Read more
