Dr. Wax is the clerkship site director. She will observe student’s performance of the neurological examination within the first two weeks of the rotation and provide feedback. This should be repeated in the last 2 weeks, as well, to ensure mastery of the neurological examination. The clinical mini-CEX can be performed with Dr. Wax, Dr. Condefer, or any of the clinic preceptors. Dr. Wax works with the clinic manager, on scheduling. They are good resources for any questions. Please tell the site director if you have any specific goals for the month so that your experience is optimized.

The neurology rotation at Central Washington Hospital offers a combination of inpatient and outpatient experiences.

Inpatient: the neurohospitalist team covers a busy consultative inpatient service. During the rotation, 3.5 days a week will be spent with the inpatient neurohospitalist on service. Students are expected to see 2-5 patients per week on average. The student is expected to follow their patient from the initial consult until discharge or resolution of the consult issue. During this period, the student is expected to write daily progress notes and be involved in recommendations for ordering medications, labs, and other diagnostic testing for their assigned patients. A reasonable guideline is to follow 1-3 patients at any time. There are no weekend or night call responsibilities.

Clinic: Two half days per week will be spent in clinic. The first half day will be spent shadowing one of the clinic preceptors, offering the opportunity to observe different interaction styles. On the second half day of the week students will see the patient first and then present to their clinic preceptor. Students should write clinic notes for the patients they see; these notes should be submitted to Dr. Wax or Dr. Tornabene for feedback. Clinic typically runs from 8 AM – 5 PM. There are no weekend or call responsibilities.

Other opportunities include observing / reading EMGs, EEGs, evoked potentials, lumbar punctures, imaging procedures, etc. Experience with neuropsychology, neurophysiatry, and sleep medicine may be able to be arranged depending on the month. Please contact Dr. Wax at least four weeks before your rotation if you have an interest in these opportunities.
