COURSE REQUIREMENTS
This section outlines the similarities and differences between the adult neurology clerkship and pediatrics. For information that is available on this web site, we will refer you to the corresponding tab on the left-hand side of the page. For information specific to pediatrics, you will learn about the requirements on your first day at the site.
Goals and objectives:
- Learn the fundamentals of the neurological history and exam for children.
- Curriculum: Residents and attendings at Children’s hospital will teach the pediatric neurological exam, and the essentials of taking a pediatric neurological (developmental) history. During Thursday didactics at UWMC, a systematic review of the general (adult) neurological exam will occur.
- Benchmark: The student will perform neurological history and physical exam assessments on hospitalized patients and present them to the team.
- Learn to take care of children with epilepsy.
- Curriculum: About 50% of the hospitalized patients evaluated by the pediatric neurology service are children with epilepsy or acute symptomatic seizures. During the four week rotation, the student will have a broad exposure to various epileptic conditions that affect children. Students will learn the clinical indications for EEGs, and how the results are applied in clinical decisions.
- Benchmark: Understand the different causes and treatments for epilepsy in childhood. How does epilepsy affect the daily lives of these children and their caregivers?
- Have clinical exposure to other pediatric neurological diseases.
- Curriculum: Students will also have exposure to pediatric patients with altered mental status, neuromuscular disorders, and neurometabolic disorders.
- Benchmark: The chief resident and attending will be responsible for assigning patients for the student to follow and evaluate so that a broad exposure to pediatric neurological disorders is obtained.
- Pediatric Neurology conference presentation.
- Curriculum: Participate in conferences.
- Benchmark: During the third or fourth week of the rotation, the student will be expected to either present a topic or current case at a clinical conference.
Absentee policy: See corresponding tab.
Didactics: Orientation and most didactics will be accomplished at Children's Hospital. You are encouraged to participate in the weekly adult didactic sessions which take place at UW from 1-4PM each Thursday. See the Didactics page for room numbers.
Presentations: A topic presentation will be assigned at Children's Hospital.
Grand rounds: See corresponding tab.
Independent study: Book recommendations at site.
Mini-CEX: No requirement.
Patient log: No requirement.
Pocket syllabus: None
Student evaluation: UWSOM Evaluation of Performance
Course evaluations: E*Value
Final exam: No requirement.
Grading policy: The UWSOM Evaluation of Performance will be used for grading. The elective is eligible for H/HP/P/F. The evaluation has 13 categories with score range from 1-4. We will subtract the "insufficient contact or cannot comment" categories and divide by the total number of catagories scored. For example: Student 1 has 13 catagories scored [8(4s), 2(3s) and 3(2s)] = 44/13 = 3.38. Student 2 has 9 catagories scored [7(4s) and 2(3s)] = 34/9 = 3.78. Scores will translate to:
3.5 - 4 HONORS
3 - 3.49 HP
1.5 - 2.99 PASS
Below 1.49 FAIL
