Student Information

Clerkship orientation: Watch the orientation video online before the first day.

Badging and Parking:  The Northwest Campus Public Safety Office manages both.

  • Badging:  Any UMMC badge can be used.  See exception requirement for monthly parking.

  • Doors:  Doorway access at the hospital will be attached to your Husky card rather than the badge.  If you don't have a Husky card, the badging office will issue you a temporary Prox card, which requires some paperwork and an in-person visit.  Please email your preference about Husky vs Prox card to the Northwest Campus Public Safety Office with the folloing information.

  • Parking:
    Clinic parking is free.
Hospital parking is more complicated.  There are 3 options:
    • Option 1:  Minimal free street parking (2 hr limit) is available on N 115th close to the hospital.
    • Option 2:  Daily parking in the ramp.  The daily rate (9/2024) is $10/day.  You are better off paying the daily rate if you park 8 or fewer times during the month.
    • Option 3:  Monthly parking in the ramp.  The monthly rate (9/2024) is $81.   Unfortunately, monthly parking will require a NEW badge from the Northwest Campus Public Safety Office because access can't be attached to a UW student badge or a Husky card.

Clinical Experience

Inpatient experience:  During your inpatient time, you will have hands-on clinical experience and also are expected to follow your patients on service. The inpatient neurology team sees a wide range of acute neurologic disorders. There is a neurohospitalist that covers the service weekly, and you will be working with each neurohospitalist closely. Students are expected to see 2-5 inpatients per week on average. The student is expected to follow their assigned patient from time of consultation until discharge or the resolution of the consult issue. A reasonable guideline is to follow 1-3 patients at any time. There are no weekend or night call responsibilities.

Clinic experience:  During your outpatient time, you will be working with several neurologists. This experience is valuable for understanding what types of neurologic problems are seen on an outpatient basis. You may have the opportunity to see EMG/NCS performed and also some EEG’s read by the outpatient physicians.
