Multisite assessment of NIA-AA guidelines for the neuropathologic evaluation of Alzheimer’s disease

October 01, 2015 in Publications, Brain

An article published in the journal of Alzheimer's & Dementia in August 2015 describes work done to better describe a “gold standard” consensus for evaluating and grading Alzheimer's Disease. The research collaboration between 10 National Institute on Aging AD Centers, led by principle investigator Thomas Montine (UW Medicine Department of Pathology), utilized digital pathology services at the UW Pathology Digital Imaging Core Facility to perform part of a multisite neuropathologic evaluation of AD cases. Their research utilized the Pathology Digital Imaging Core Facility to digitize case slides and develop a custom digital slide web application which displayed whole slide images to participants from NIA Alzheimer's Disease Centers and collected assessments of the case slides. Evaluation of glass slides and digitally prepared whole-slide images were compared as part of the study. The findings indicate high agreement with potential modifications to Alzheimer's Disease evaluation for modest improvements.
