A cross-sectional study in Philadelphia found that the beginning of the city’s stay-at-home order on March 23, 2020 was associated a 52% increase in opioid overdose among non-Hispanic Black individuals but a 24% decrease among non-Hispanic white people. Researchers compared mean counts of fatal opioid overdoses in the 3 months after the beginning of Philadelphia’s stay-at-home order to 3 months before and the same 3-month period the year prior.
