How Efficacious Must a COVID-19 Coronavirus Vaccine Be to Prevent or Stop an Epidemic by Itself

[pre-print, not peer reviewed] Bartsch et al. simulated vaccination strategies for SARS-CoV-2 in the US and concluded that a vaccine with an efficacy of at least 70% and coverage of at least 60% could eliminate the need for social distancing measures if introduced within 90 days of the start of the pandemic.   Bartsch et al. (May 30, 2020). How Efficacious Must a COVID-19 Coronavirus Vaccine Be to Prevent or Stop an Epidemic by Itself. Pre-print downloaded June…

The Non-Specific and Sex-Differential Effects of Vaccines

Aaby et al. review studies showing that live vaccines like BCG have non-specific effects including protection against respiratory and viral infections, and that females develop a greater antibody response to BCG. There is no conclusive evidence, however, that BCG vaccination provides non-specific protection against COVID-19, and social justice issues could arise from shifting BCG vaccine supplies from low– to high–income countries.  Aaby et al. (May 27, 2020)….

Safety, Tolerability, and Immunogenicity of a Recombinant Adenovirus Type-5 Vectored COVID-19 Vaccine: A Dose-Escalation, Open-Label, Non-Randomised, First-in-Human Trial

A phase 1 trial of an adenovirus type-5 vectored COVID-19 vaccine expressing the spike glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2 was conducted in Wuhan, China (dose-escalation, single-center, open-label, non-randomized). Thirty-six participants received each dose of the vaccine (low, middle, high). At least one adverse reaction within 7 days of vaccination was reported in 83% of participants in the…

Determinants of COVID-19 Vaccine Acceptance in the U.S.

[pre-print, not peer reviewed] Out of 672 US adults surveyed during an online platform in May 2020, 450 (67%) said they would accept a COVID-19 vaccine if recommended for them. A greater acceptance the vaccine was found among males (72% vs 63%), adults older than 55 (78% vs 56-64%), Asians (81% vs 40-74%), and college and/or…

Immunogenic Profile of SARS-CoV-2 Spike in Individuals Recovered from COVID-19

[pre-print, not peer reviewed] Juno et al. found that following mild to moderate SARS-CoV-2 infection, antibody responses against the viral spike protein are routinely elicited and that they are correlate with the ability of blood plasma to block binding to the ACE2 receptor. This has positive implications for vaccine development because several COVID-19 vaccine candidates that are now entering clinical trials…

SARS-CoV-2 Infection Protects against Rechallenge in Rhesus Macaques

Chandrashekar et al. found that SARS-CoV-2 infection induced protective immunity against re-infection in nonhuman primates.  Chandrashekar et al. (May 20, 2020). SARS-CoV-2 Infection Protects against Rechallenge in Rhesus Macaques. Science. https://doi.org/10.1126/science.abc4776
