Abstract: The project will create a Cultural Landscape Inventory (CLI) for Tech Area 18 of the Manhattan Project National Historical Park. A cultural landscape is a recognized cultural resource type by the National Park Service (NPS) and documentation follows guidance set forth by Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act for Federal Agencies. Cultural landscapes are defined a places within the US NPS system that have significance in American history and authenticity to a historic time period (Period of Significance).
The CLI for Tech Area 18 will inventory and analyze a bounded cultural landscape determined through consultation with LANL staff. The project will summarize current preservation work on the Slotin Building, Battleship Bunker, and Pond Cabin. Condition and location of archaeological sites will also be included in the inventory. The CLI will study the intersection of natural systems and features with historic buildings and archaeological sites and provide specific information on stabilization strategies. This inventory and associated recommendations will be summarized in overall landscape character preservation guidance. The CLI will be used as the first step in planning for visitor use and interpretation for the overall site by creating a complete history and inventory of tangible and intangible features contributing to historical significance
