Abstract: Investigators from PSU and NPS staff will collaborate on the following objectives. This project will be conducted in at least two phases (see Attachment B for a description of anticipated phases). This agreement initially funds Phase 1 work. Subject to the availability of funding and satisfactory progress of work during the initial project phases, additional phases are anticipated as future modifications to this agreement.
The Phase 1 objectives are to:
1. Conduct consultation and oral history interviews with the Klamath Tribes to determine the extent and contemporary cultural significance of stacked rock ceremonial features within CRLA.
2. Conduct a literature review and/or a synthesis of existing documents to determine the extent and significance of such stacked rock features.
3. Develop one or more new data layers within the park’s cultural GIS database showing the locations of such features and associated landmarks.
4. Carry out expanded NPS consultation with park-associated Indian tribes.
5. Produce an initial compendium of findings that incorporates research findings as well as pre-existing materials on the subject.
The Phase 2 objectives are to:
1. Develop and submit a National Register nomination addressing stacked rock ceremonial features associated with Crater Lake.
2. Produce a project report that includes the original compendium and a brief discussion of management and interpretive guidelines for these features that are compatible with tribal protocols and values.
